In a Thursday afternoon interview in an office in Seoul’s Mapo District, chef Im Seong-kuen spoke after a long silence, saying he did not view the matter as closed simply because court proceedings had ended. He described his response to the past offenses as a decision to be forthcoming and to answer questions as they arise.
Im has four drunk-driving cases spanning 1999, 2009, 2017 and 2020, and there have been reports of a fine related to a mutual assault case. Public attention has increasingly focused on the pattern and the circumstances surrounding these offenses.
He acknowledged that he failed to grasp the gravity of his actions at the time and noted a shift in public awareness in recent years, driven in part by coverage of crashes involving children and mass casualties. He said the social atmosphere at the time was different and that the sense of urgency today is clearer.
Im attributed the repeated offenses to youth and poor judgment, insisting that his responsibility is complete and there are no excuses. “I was young. I didn’t understand how dangerous it really was,” he said, adding that his lack of moral awareness contributed to the behavior.
On the most recent incident, Im said he had called a paid designated driver and chose not to mention it earlier to avoid dragging the driver into negative publicity. He described an evening after filming ended around midnight, when the team went for drinks, and a dispute arose during a drive toward his neighborhood as they navigated a one-way street.
He said the destination was about 150 meters away but in the wrong direction, which would have required a detour of roughly two kilometers. Im claimed he refused an additional fee after a disagreement, the driver left him, and he later returned to move the car only to be stopped by a police cruiser as the street remained busy and bystanders urged him to relocate the vehicle.
Im stated that the entire sequence was considered during sentencing and noted that he did not previously detail the incident because he did not want to harm the driver. He added that the designated driver’s company later submitted a transaction history to support his account, and he maintained that he was portrayed as driving a long distance while intoxicated without this context.
Regarding the 2017 incident in which police found him asleep in the driver’s seat after an argument with a designated driver, Im said a second driver was called and he eventually fell asleep until a patrol officer located him.
Regardless of circumstances, Im emphasized that the responsibility lies with him and rejected any attempt to shift blame onto others. “I’ve never tried to dodge responsibility,” he said, adding that he has long held himself accountable.
The hardest part, he said, has been the sense of betrayal felt by those who trusted him, including his family, colleagues and production staff. He described the impact of online criticism on his young granddaughter and said the resulting trauma would be carried for life.
Im addressed his participation in a television program, noting his promise to take part in Season 2 after missing Season 1 due to scheduling conflicts and expressing regret that his appearance may have overshadowed the efforts of the program and its team. He recalled a letter from an elementary school student praising his work in Korean cuisine as particularly painful to read, underscoring the personal impact of the controversy.
He urged that criticisms be directed at him personally, rather than at his family or colleagues, stating that they have already suffered enough and that he is truly sorry for the harm caused.

공공의 관심은 반복된 음주운전의 패턴과 그에 따른 상황에 집중됐다.
그는 “당시 제 행동의 중대성을 제대로 파악하지 못했다”고 인정하며, 최근 몇 년 사이 어린이의 대형 사고를 다루는 보도와 사회적 분위기 변화로 공공 인식이 달라졌다고 설명했다. 그는 오늘날 더 강한 경각심이 존재한다고 말했다.
젊은 시절의 안일함과 잘못된 판단이 반복으로 이어졌다고 그는 밝혔다. “나는 어렸고 그것이 얼마나 위험한지 이해하지 못했다. 그로 인한 도덕적 인식의 부족이 반복으로 이어졌으며, 이는 전적으로 나의 책임이다. 변명은 없다.”
임은 자신이 지적한 사건 중 일부가 운전자가 음주 직후 직접 운전하지 않았다는 사실과 관련이 있음을 설명했다. “최근 사건에서 유료 지정 운전자를 불렀지만, 그것이 부정적 보도로 이어지는 것을 원하지 않아 그 부분은 언급하지 않았다”고 말했다.
그의 설명에 따르면 촬영은 자정이 지나 끝났고 팀은 도시의 다른 곳에서 술을 마신 뒤, 그는 자신을 동네 쪽으로 내려주던 지정 운전자를 불렀다. 그러나 방향이 한 방향으로 가다가 반대 방향으로 이동했고, 목적지는 약 150미터 남짓 떨어진 곳이었지만 잘못된 방향이었다. 우회를 하려면 약 2km의 추가 거리가 필요했다.
임은 운전자에게 우회를 제안했고, 추가 요금을 요구하자 거절했다. 결국 운전자는 그를 차에서 내려 대치했고, 임은 집으로 향해 차를 내려두었다. 몇 시간 뒤 근처 가게 주인들이 차를 옮겨 달라며 전화했다.
그가 차에 다시 올라 차를 움직이려 할 때 경찰 순찰차가 뒤에서 다가왔다. 거리는 이미 분주했고 여러 사람이 차를 치워 달라고 요청했다. 네다섯 시간의 수면으로도 문제가 생기지 않는다고 생각했고, 그 생각이 음주운전 단속에서 적발된 원인이었다고 말했다.
그의 진술에 따르면 당시의 전체 흐름은 재판부가 판단을 내리던 시점에 이미 다루어졌다고 한다. 대중에게 음주운전에 대해 공개적으로 사과할 때도 운전자에 대한 해를 우려해 그 부분에 대한 자세한 설명은 피했다고 덧붙였다.
2017년 사건에 대해서는 경찰이 운전석에서 잠들어 있던 상태를 발견했다고 기억한다. 당시 그는 지정 운전자가 다툼 끝에 길가에 남겨두고 간 뒤 다른 운전자를 불렀고, 기다리다 잠이 들었으며 순찰 경찰이 발견했다.
상황이나 맥락에 관계없이 책임은 전적으로 본인에게 있다.
가장 큰 고통은 신뢰를 얻었던 이들이 느낀 배신감이었다고 그는 말했다. 가족과 가까운 동료들이 공공의 분노의 대상이 되는 것을 보기가 특히 힘들었다고 덧붙였다.
그의 어린 손주가 온라인에서 언급된 순간은 특히 상처가 컸다고 말했다. 며칠간 거의 식사를 하지 못하고 물로 버텼다고 했다.
“대중은 시간이 지나면 잊을지 몰라도 이 트라우마는 남은 생애 동안 계속 떠오를 것이다.”라고 그는 말했다.
또한 그는 ‘Culinary Class Wars Season 2’ 참여에 대해 말했다. 첫 시즌을 일정 충돌로 놓친 뒤 두 번째 시즌에 참여하겠다고 약속했고, 제안이 와서 망설임 없이 참여했지만, 그의 출연이 프로그램과 제작진, 동료 참가자들의 노력에 그림자를 드리웠다고 깊이 안타까워했다.
방영 이후 시청자들의 반응 중 특히 충격적이었다고 느낀 것은 한 초등학생으로부터 온 편지였다. 편지는 “나는 6학년이다”로 시작했고, 한국 요리를 끝까지 가르쳐 준 데에 감사하며 언젠가 훌륭한 셰프가 되고 싶다고 썼다. 그는 그 편지를 여러 차례 되새겼고, 그 학생이 떠올랐다고 말했다.
“어른들로부터의 비판은 견딜 수 있지만, 아이의 눈으로 자신이 악당으로 보일 수 있다는 생각은 마음을 무너뜨린다”고 그는 말했다.
끝으로 그는 공개적으로 비판을 받되 가족과 함께 일했던 이들을 더 이상 공격하지 말아 달라고 호소했다. “그들에게도 충분히 고통받았다. 정말로 미안하다.”
