A major Korean airline group and four related carriers will ban the in-flight use of portable batteries starting Monday, in a preemptive move to prevent lithium-ion power bank fires.
Under the updated safety policy, passengers will not be allowed to use portable battery packs on flights operated by the group’s airlines. The power banks can be carried in the cabin, but their use and charging are prohibited. Passengers must cover metal charging ports with electrical tape or place each battery in a separate plastic bag or pouch to prevent short-circuiting. Beginning next week, batteries should be kept in the seatback pocket or under the seat in front, and must not be stored in overhead bins.
An airline official said the ban is a necessary measure to ensure flight safety and that passenger cooperation is essential.
The move follows ongoing safety concerns over power banks amid reports of in-flight fires. A regional airline's jet caught fire before takeoff at Gimhae International Airport in Busan in January 2025, with a battery pack in the cabin's overhead bin identified as the cause.
Industry-wide cabin regulations on power banks have been strengthened. Previously, the group implemented fire-prevention measures in line with policies by a government ministry, including providing insulation tape at check-in counters and boarding gates to prevent short-circuiting, and attaching temperature-sensitive stickers to overhead bins for overheating detection. Cabin crews conducted drills on power bank fire scenarios.

해당 그룹 소속 항공사 관계자는 기내에서 파워 뱅크 사용 금지는 비행 안전의 최고 수준을 보장하기 위한 필요한 조치이며, 승객의 협조가 필수적이라고 밝혔다. 또한 모든 이용자에게 안전하고 편안한 여행을 제공하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다.
이번 결정은 파워 뱅크로 인한 기내 화재에 대한 안전 우려가 커지는 상황에서 내려졌다. 지난해 1월, 부산의 Gimhae 국제공항에서 이륙 전 화재가 발생했고 기내 천장 수납함에 보관된 배터리 팩이 원인으로 확인됐다.
전 세계 항공 업계는 파워 뱅크에 대한 객실 규정을 강화하고 있다. 국토교통부의 정책에 따라 해당 그룹 소속 항공사는 화재 예방 조치를 시행해 왔으며, 체크인 카운터와 탑승 게이트에서 절연 테이프를 제공하고 오버헤드 수납함에 과열 탐지용 온도 민감 스티커를 부착하는 등의 조치를 취했다. 또한 승무원은 파워 뱅크 화재 시나리오에 대비한 특별 훈련을 받아 기내 대응 능력을 높였다.
