Atlanta Braves shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery to repair a finger injury. The procedure addressed a torn tendon in his right middle finger, and the club said recovery is expected to take four to five months.
The injury was sustained after he slipped on a sheet of ice in his native South Korea last week.
Kim signed a one-year, $20 million contract with the Braves in December, returning to the team with whom he spent the final portion of the injury-plagued 2025 season.
He previously spent four seasons with the San Diego Padres and signed a two-year contract with the Rays in February 2025, though he began that season on the injured list while recovering from shoulder surgery the previous fall.
Rehab was interrupted by hamstring issues, and upon returning he also dealt with calf and back problems.
He appeared in 24 games for the Rays and 24 games for the Braves last year, batting .214 with two homers and five RBIs for the Rays, and .253 with three homers and 12 RBIs for the Braves.
Kim, a Gold Glove winner at the utility position in 2023, is regarded as a versatile defender who can contribute power and speed on the bases. In 2023 he set career highs with 17 home runs and 38 steals.
The latest injury will also keep him out of the World Baseball Classic, scheduled for March 5 to 17, where he would have been South Korea's starting shortstop.

김의 부상 재활은 햄스트링 문제로 차질을 빚었고, 복귀 후에도 종아리 및 허리 문제를 겪었다.
작년 레이스에서 24경기에 출전한 뒤 브레이스에서도 24경기에 더 출전했고, 레이스에서는 타율 .214에 홈런 2, 타점 5를, 브레이스에서는 타율 .253에 홈런 3, 타점 12를 각각 기록했다.
전성기에는 2023년 골드글러브를 수상한 다목적 수비수로, 타석에서도 다소 파워를 보여주고 주루 속도도 갖춘 고급 수비형 선수로 꼽혔다. 그 해 2023년에는 홈런 17개, 도루 38개로 커리어 하이를 기록했다.
이번 부상으로 김은 3월 5일부터 17일까지 열리는 월드베이스볼클래식에 참가하지 못하게 됐다. 대회에서 그는 한국의 주전 유격수로 뽑힐 예정이었다.
