Korean athletes set to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, participated in a joint press conference at the Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, on Wednesday. The event featured athletes from various sports, including short track, figure skating, speed skating, and curling.
As the Winter Olympics approach, Korea has set a goal of winning at least three gold medals. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) organized the press conference to mark the 30-day countdown to the 25th Winter Olympics. KSOC President Ryu Seung-min and Korea Skating Union President Lee Soo-kyung, who will serve as the chef de mission, were present at the event.
In total, athletes from around the world will compete in 116 medal events across eight sports and 16 disciplines. As of last Friday, Korea had 37 athletes qualified in short track, speed skating, figure skating, curling, alpine skiing, and cross-country skiing. This number may rise to 69 as additional Olympic quota spots are assigned later this month in sports such as snowboard, freestyle skiing, bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, and biathlon.
At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Korea secured two gold, five silver, and two bronze medals, finishing in 14th place, which was its lowest ranking since the 2002 competition in Salt Lake City. Ryu expressed the desire to surpass the medal count from Beijing, stating, "We would love to see our athletes win at least one more gold medal than Beijing." He also emphasized the importance of demonstrating dignity and leadership during the Olympics.
Lee acknowledged her initial conservative target but mentioned being encouraged by recent performances of Korean athletes. She noted that all nine medals in Beijing came from ice sports and expressed hope for a more diversified medal portfolio this time, with expectations for success in freestyle snowboard, curling, bobsleigh, and skeleton.
During the press conference, athletes expressed their determination to contribute to the country's medal count. Speed skater Kim Min-sun highlighted her preparation for the women's 500 meters event, stating that the Korea Institute of Sport Science has been instrumental in her training and recovery. "We have objective data to figure out how much rest we need," she explained.
Kim's teammate, Park Ji-woo, expressed confidence in their chances, declaring, "We didn't win any gold in speed skating in Beijing, and we will bring home at least one gold this year." Additionally, Jeong Yeong-seok, who will compete in mixed doubles curling with Kim Seon-yeong, expressed the team's ambition to become the first curling champions from Korea, stating, "We will try to be the last team standing with the gold medal in our hands."

다가오는 동계 올림픽을 맞아 한국은 최소 3개의 금메달을 목표로 설정했다고 수요일 발표했다.
한국 스포츠 & 올림픽 위원회(KSOC)는 제천 국가훈련센터에서 올림픽 출전 선수들을 모아 밀라노와 코르티나 담페초에서 열리는 제25회 동계올림픽의 30일 카운트다운을 기념하는 합동 기자회견을 개최했다. KSOC 회장 류승민과 한국 스케이팅 연맹 회장 이수경이 참석하여 국가대표 단장을 맡고 있다.
전 세계 선수들이 8개 스포츠와 16개 종목에서 116개의 메달 이벤트에 참가할 예정이다. KSOC에 따르면, 한국은 지난 금요일 기준으로 쇼트트랙, 스피드 스케이팅, 피겨 스케이팅, 컬링, 알파인 스키 및 크로스컨트리 스키에서 37명의 선수가 올림픽에 출전 자격을 얻었다고 밝혔다. 또 다른 스포츠인 스노보드, 프리스타일 스키, 봅슬레이, 스켈레톤, 루지 및 바이애슬론에서 올림픽 쿼터 자리가 배분될 경우 이 숫자는 최대 69명에 이를 것으로 예상된다.
2022년 베이징 동계올림픽에서 한국은 금메달 2개, 은메달 5개, 동메달 2개를 획득하며 14위에 올랐으며, 이는 2002년 솔트 레이크 시티 대회 이후 가장 낮은 순위다.
류 회장은 "우리는 베이징보다 최소한 1개의 금메달을 더 획득하길 바란다"며 "메달 수치 외에도 이 올림픽이 우리 선수들이 자신의 품위와 리더십을 보여주는 기회가 되길 희망한다"고 말했다.
이 회장은 처음에는 보수적인 목표를 설정하고 싶었다고 인정했지만, 한국 선수들의 최근 성과에 힘을 얻고 있다고 전했다.
이 회장은 베이징 올림픽에서 얻은 9개의 모든 메달이 얼음에서 나왔다고 언급하며, 이번에는 프리스타일 스노보드, 컬링, 봅슬레이, 스켈레톤 부문에서도 더 다양화된 메달을 기대한다고 말했다.
이에 따라 기자회견에 참석한 선수들은 자신들이 국가의 메달 수를 늘리고 싶다고 밝혔다.
스피드 스케이팅 선수 김민선은 2월 15일 예정된 여자 500미터 종목을 위해 훈련과 회복을 돕고 있는 한국스포츠과학연구원의 지원을 받고 있다고 말했다.
김 선수가 "그들은 장비와 고급 데이터 분석을 이용해 훈련과 회복을 도와주고 있다"며 "우리는 예를 들어 얼마나 휴식이 필요한지를 객관적인 데이터로 파악하고 있다"고 설명했다. "다른 나라의 선수들도 이미 그렇게 하고 있으며, 우리도 그 방향으로 나아가고 있다고 생각한다."라고 말했다.
김의 팀 동료인 박지우는 보다 대담하게 예측하며 "우리는 베이징에서 스피드 스케이팅에서 금메달을 따지 못했지만, 올해는 최소한 1개의 금메달을 따낼 것"이라고 말했다.
한국은 컬링 부문에서 첫 금메달을 목표로 하고 있으며, 김선영과 혼합복식 경기에 참가하는 정영석은 자신의 팀이 한국 최초의 컬링 챔피언이 되기 위해 노력할 것이라고 전했다.
정 선수는 "우리는 혼합복식에서 올림픽 마지막 팀으로 출전권을 따냈다"고 지난해 마지막 올림픽 예선에서 팀이 플레이오프에서 승리한을 회상하며 "올림픽에서는 우리 팀이 금메달을 들고 마지막으로 남는 팀이 되도록 할 것"이라고 말했다.
