The flame for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics was officially handed over to the host city organizers during a ceremony in Athens on Thursday. This event marks the beginning of a two-month torch relay in Italy leading up to the Games, which are set to open on February 6.
"Today marks a magical moment for all of us," stated the president of the Milan-Cortina organizing committee at the Panathenaic Stadium, a historic site where the first modern Olympics were revived in 1896.
Due to a forecast of inclement weather, Greek organizers shortened the ceremony and canceled the attendance of thousands of schoolchildren who were expected to participate.
Similar adjustments were made on November 26 in ancient Olympia, where a backup flame was utilized for the official lighting ceremony, the birthplace of the Games in 776 BC.
Following a nine-day torch relay around Greece, the flame was kept overnight at the Acropolis in Athens before heading to Rome for a 63-day journey covering 12,000 kilometers through Italy's major cities, including the Colosseum and the archaeological site of Pompeii.
The Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22, with the Paralympic Winter Games following from March 6 to 15.
As with previous Olympic Games, including Athens 2004, there are reports of delays in the construction of venues. A senior official from the International Ski Federation expressed concern about the progress at the site designated for snowboarding and freestyle skiing events.
Additionally, both the International Ice Hockey Federation and the National Hockey League have raised issues regarding delays in the construction of the main ice hockey arena for the Games.
Despite these concerns, local organizers maintain that all venues will be completed on schedule.
