The government will establish a task force to investigate potential illegal activities or misconduct by public officials related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful martial law attempt last December, as announced by the prime minister's office on Tuesday.
During a Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok proposed the initiative, emphasizing the government's commitment to uphold the sovereignty of the people and democracy.
"We will swiftly conduct an internal investigation into public officials who participated in or cooperated with the martial law bid and secure the grounds for taking appropriate personnel measures," Kim stated in his opening remarks.
The investigation will encompass all 49 central government agencies, excluding those under the presidential office or independent bodies, and is set to conclude by January 31.
Among these agencies, 12, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the prosecution and police, the prime minister's office, and the ministries of finance, foreign affairs, justice, and defense, will undergo intensive scrutiny.
During the Cabinet meeting, President Lee Jae Myung expressed support for the proposal, asserting that it is "definitely something that must be done" alongside the ongoing investigation by a special counsel team.
Lee highlighted the necessity for accountability, stating that officials found to be involved should face disciplinary measures based on their level of involvement, while the special counsel team will address criminal accountability.
Kim also raised concerns regarding the potential promotion of officials implicated in the martial law attempt, warning that such actions could lead to public division within the office.

그 중 12개 기관, 즉 합동참모본부, 검찰 및 경찰, 국무총리실, 그리고 기획재정부, 외교부, 법무부, 국방부가 집중 점검 대상으로 지정되었다.
국무회의 중 이재명 대통령은 이 제안에 대한 지지를 표명하며, 특별검사팀의 조사가 진행되고 있는 것 외에도 "반드시 해야 하는 일"이라고 말했다.
그는 관여한 것으로 밝혀진 공직자들은 그들의 개입 정도에 따라 징계 조치를 통해 책임을 져야 한다고 강조했으며, 특별검사팀은 범죄 책임을 처리하는 데 집중할 것이라고 말했다.
김 총리는 계엄령 시도에 연루된 공직자들이 승진 대상으로 고려될 수 있다는 우려가 제기되고 있다며, 이러한 문제가 결국 공직과의 분열을 초래할 수 있다고 언급했다.
