Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon appeared before special counsel investigators on Saturday for questioning regarding corruption allegations involving self-proclaimed power broker Myung Tae-kyun.
Oh arrived at the office of special counsel Min Joong-ki shortly before 9 a.m. to address alleged violations of the political funds act related to transactions involving unpublished opinion polls during his 2021 mayoral by-election.
This marks Oh's first appearance before the special counsel, following a previous questioning by prosecutors in May.
The investigation focuses on claims that Kim Han-jung, a supporter of Oh, requested a polling company effectively operated by Myung to conduct 13 unpublished opinion polls during the by-election, paying 33 million won ($22,650) on Oh's behalf.
Before entering the office, Oh presented a printed news report suggesting that the unpublished opinion polls Myung claimed to have provided were largely fabricated and not regularly shared, as indicated by a forensic investigation.
Myung arrived around 9:15 a.m. as a witness in the case and stated to reporters that Kim may have sent him money at Oh's instruction.
Investigators are expected to question Oh regarding his awareness of Kim's payments to Myung and whether these payments were made in exchange for conducting unpublished opinion polls during the campaign.
