South Korean utility player Bae Ji-hwan has reportedly been claimed off waivers by the New York Mets.
Citing multiple sources, it was reported that the Mets picked Bae off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who had removed him from their 40-man roster two days earlier.
Bae, 26, is noted for his speed and defensive versatility, having played all three outfield positions in the majors, as well as games at second base and shortstop.
Despite his versatility, Bae has faced challenges at the plate since making his major league debut with the Pirates in 2022, posting a career batting line of .223/.294/.293 over 163 games.
In 2025, Bae appeared in only 13 major league games, recording one hit in 20 at-bats and striking out nine times.
After leading the Pirates in spring training with 16 hits and 13 runs scored, Bae made the team's Opening Day roster in March. However, he was sent to the minors in early April and later recalled briefly in May before spending four months in the minors.
Bae returned to the majors on September 7, but his second stint lasted only a week, during which he went 0-for-9 with four strikeouts in six games.
In contrast, Bae has excelled in the minors, achieving an .805 on-base plus slugging (OPS) with Triple-A Indianapolis in 2025 and a career OPS of .819 over seven minor league seasons.
According to reports, Bae could serve as an option in center field for the Mets, as their only other natural center fielder is Tyrone Taylor, who posted a .598 OPS this past season and is viewed as a potential non-tender candidate.
