Over the past four years, illegal drone activities have led to the disruption of 122 flights, prompting calls for stricter regulations and penalties. Data from the Incheon International Airport Corporation and Korea Airports Corporation revealed that between September 2020 and August 2024, there were 506 instances of unauthorized drone activities in airport airspace, with 122 cases directly impacting flight operations. These disruptions included 84 flight delays, 32 temporary flight suspensions, 30 aborted landing attempts, and 8 flight diversions. In South Korea, drones are prohibited from flying within a 9.3-kilometer radius of airports without prior approval, with violators facing fines of up to 3 million won ($2,248). Lawmakers emphasize the need to enhance penalties for offenders and implement more robust surveillance systems to prevent illegal drone intrusions, citing the serious threats drones pose to airport security and passenger safety. Despite efforts to raise awareness and the installation of drone detection systems at major airports, incidents persist, with recent disruptions during the Chuseok holiday highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by unauthorized drone activities.
