Universities are increasingly forming strategic partnerships with industry and expanding into new academic fields to enhance their brand, increase funding opportunities, and address evolving community needs, participants at the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2025 reported.
During a discussion titled “Elevating Local Roots to Global Reach in Higher Education,” a professor from King Saud University emphasized the importance of aligning with external partners and diversifying into emerging disciplines to deepen institutional relevance.
She noted that such partnerships can lead to industry-sponsored research budgets and practical collaborations, stating, “You are serving the community and at the same time you are also giving them the right knowledge.”
The professor also underscored the significance of governance, clarity of roles, and a common language in academia-industry partnerships. She advised that discussions should be framed in business terms regarding roles, deliverables, patent ownership, and risks, warning against imbalanced resource contributions.
“If you are coming with faculty and students and they are coming with money, then it has to become written in the collaboration that there is trust between the two partners,” she explained, emphasizing the need for equitable contributions.
Collaborations in fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and climate change were cited as effective models. Institutions are encouraged to strategically select partners aligned with their interests, leverage institutional strengths, foster a collaborative culture, and remain adaptable and flexible.
The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Korea University highlighted a summer school program focused on climate change issues, which brought together 130 scholars and students from 35 universities to develop solutions in areas like energy policy, circular economy, and food security.
This initiative is part of Korea University’s globalization agenda and has enhanced its global reputation in environmental and climate change research. The dean remarked, “It was an excellent opportunity for us to see what we could do in terms of environmental and social impact,” noting that the program facilitated several partnerships.
She added, “This was a venue for knowledge exchange. It focused on the university, the wider community, and the global community as well.”

그녀는 세션 중 “지역 사회에 봉사하면서 동시에 그들에게 올바른 지식을 제공하고 있다”고 강조하며, 이러한 노력이 산업 후원 연구 예산 및 실용적인 협력의 기회를 열어줄 수 있다고 말했다.
알하르비는 또한 학계와 산업 간의 파트너십에서 거버넌스, 역할의 명확성 및 상호 이해의 중요성을 강조했다.
그녀는 역할, 결과물, 특허 소유권 및 리스크에 대해 비즈니스 용어로 논의할 필요성을 강조하며 불균형한 자원 기여에 대한 경고를 했다.
“여러분이 교수와 학생들과 함께 들어오고 그들이 돈을 가지고 온다면, 이러한 신뢰가 양측 파트너 간에 존재해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.
사이버 보안, 인공 지능 또는 기후 변화와 같은 분야에서의 이러한 협력이 효과적인 모델로 강조되었으며, 기관들은 이제 선택한 분야에 대한 관심을 공유하는 파트너를 전략적으로 선택하고, 기관의 강점을 활용하며, 협력 문화를 조성하고, 적응력과 유연성을 유지해야 한다고 주장했다.
고려대학교 인문대학 리 하경 학장이 기후 변화와 관련된 문제를 연구하기 위해 설계된 여름 학교 프로그램을 강조했다.
7월에 시작된 이 국제 포럼은 전 세계 35개의 대학에서 130명의 학자와 학생들을 모아 에너지 정책, 순환 경제 및 식량 안보와 같은 분야에서 해결책을 모색하였다.
이 이니셔티브는 고려대학교의 세계화 의지를 반영하며, 참가자 수가 많은 프로그램을 포함한다.
“환경적 및 사회적 영향을 고려하여 우리가 무엇을 할 수 있을지 볼 수 있는 훌륭한 기회였다. 환경 및 기후 변화 연구에서 우리의 글로벌 평판을 높였다”고 말했다.
그녀는 이러한 노력을 통해 여러 파트너십을 구축하였다고 덧붙였다.
“이것은 지식 교환의 장이었다. 이는 대학, 더 넓은 지역 사회 및 글로벌 커뮤니티에 초점을 맞추었다.”
