Demand for Gyeongju’s famed Hwangnam bread has surged following last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the historic city. The brand has issued a warning against resellers inflating prices and vendors passing off imitations as the original.
First made in 1939, Hwangnam bread is a thin, hand-pressed pastry filled with sweet red bean paste, named for a local neighborhood and is considered a signature specialty of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
During the APEC summit, President Lee Jae Myung presented freshly baked Hwangnam bread to Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing hope that Xi would enjoy the taste of Gyeongju. Xi later confirmed his enjoyment of the bread, according to a presidential spokesperson.
Following the summit, Lee sent an additional 200 boxes to the Chinese delegation and instructed the Foreign Minister to present Hwangnam bread to other APEC member delegations.
The increased demand has led to shortages, as well as a rise in reselling and imitation products. In a notice posted on its website, the bakery stated, “Recently, we have seen Hwangnam bread being resold online at inflated prices and imitation products circulated, leading to consumer harm. Please place orders only through our official website.”
Due to high call volume, the bakery's phone line has been difficult to reach, and wait times at its Gyeongju flagship store have reportedly stretched up to three hours, with orders more than tripling.
The bakery is believed to have been selected as an official gift after undergoing a review process by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to the APEC summit. A company official noted that although similar products exist, they are the original brand that uses only high-quality ingredients.

지난주, 이재명 대통령은 시진핑 중국 대통령에게 막 구운 황남빵을 전달하며 그가 "경주의 맛을 즐기기 바란다"는 메시지를 전했다.
APEC 정상 회담에서 시진핑은 이 대통령에게 빵을 즐겼다고 말했다고 대통령 대변인 강유정이 전했다.
이 대통령은 후에 200박스를 추가로 중국 대표단에 보내고 외교부 장관 조현에게 다른 APEC 회원국 대표단에도 황남빵을 전달할 것을 지시했다.

빵의 수요가 급속히 증가하며 품절 사태와 재판매 및 모조품의 등장을 초래하고 있다.
제빵업체는 화요일 웹사이트에 게시한 공지에서 "최근 황남빵이 온라인에서 가격이 부풀려져 재판매되고 있으며, 모조품이 유통되어 소비자에게 피해를 주고 있다"고 밝혔다. "공식 웹사이트를 통해서만 주문해 주시기 바랍니다."
제빵업체의 전화는 높은 전화량으로 인해 연결이 어려운 상황이며, 경주 플래그십 매장에서의 대기 시간은 최대 3시간에 달하고 있으며 주문량이 세 배 이상 증가한 것으로 전해졌다.
제빵업체는 APEC 정상 회담을 앞두고 외교부의 검토 과정을 거쳐 공식 선물로 선정된 것으로 알려졌다.
한 회사 관계자는 한국 언론에 "유사한 제품이 존재하지만 우리는 원조이며 고품질 재료만 사용한다"고 언급했다.
