The economy of Columbus, Georgia, may benefit from the increasing presence and expansion of Korean firms, following the city's recent sister-city partnership with Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, according to the city's mayor.
Mayor B.H. “Skip” Henderson III stated that Columbus has a history of exchange and coexistence with Korean universities and workers. He believes that the new alliance with Jinju could foster a welcoming environment for Korean businesses.
During an interview in Seoul on October 29, Henderson expressed optimism about the potential growth of the sister-city relationship, noting that each member of the Columbus delegation has unique interests that could benefit from collaboration with Jinju.
The interview occurred after the conclusion of the 2025 Jinju International Forum on Entrepreneurship, where Henderson participated alongside representatives from Jinju’s business investment agency and local companies. He emphasized the shared values of “servant leadership” between Columbus and Jinju, which is known for being the birthplace of major global conglomerates.
Henderson signed the sister-city agreement with Jinju Mayor Jo Kyoo-il on October 26, which aims to establish close ties, promote exchanges, and create a favorable environment for sustainable cooperation.
At the Jinju forum, Henderson highlighted similarities between the two cities, including their growth in the textile industry and ambitions to develop their aerospace sectors. He suggested the possibility of hosting a similar entrepreneurship forum in Columbus to enhance global connections.
Columbus has a Korean population of approximately 2,200, the second-largest in Georgia, contributing significantly to the local industry and education. The presence of Kia's manufacturing plant in the state has further increased the Korean community.
Missy Kendrick, president and CEO of the city’s investment promotion agency, noted the importance of leveraging the Korean community to create a welcoming environment for new industries.
The Korean community's influence is also evident in education, with about five percent of faculty members at Columbus State University coming from Korea. The university has established the Korean Institute to promote Korean studies and strengthen economic ties.
Henderson believes the partnership with Jinju presents opportunities for Columbus to explore new avenues for development and attract Korean companies.

또한 두 도시 모두 첨단 제조 산업을 보유하고 있으며 항공 우주 분야의 전략적 개발에 대한 포부를 공유한다고 덧붙였다. 콜럼버스 주립대학교의 스튜어트 레이필드 총장과 도시의 투자 촉진 기관인 ‘초이스 콜럼버스’의 미시 켄드릭 CEO도 미국 도시를 주제로 한 세션에 참여하였다.
“콜럼버스에 진주 포럼과 같은 또 다른 포럼을 개최하여 글로벌리즘을 확고히 할 수 있다면 정말 좋을 것입니다. K-기업가정신을 말하며 진주에 명예를 두되, 글로벌 맥락에서 이러한 소통을 시작할 수 있다면 좋겠습니다.”라고 헨더슨 시장은 언급하였다.
콜럼버스에는 약 2,200명으로 조지아에서 애틀랜타에 이어 두 번째로 큰 한국인 인구가 거주하고 있으며, 한국인들이 이 도시의 산업과 교육에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 한국 자동차 대기업 기아는 콜럼버스에서 64킬로미터 북쪽에 위치한 주에서 유일한 미국 제조 공장을 운영하고 있다. 켄드릭은 이 공장의 공급업체 직원들과 그 가족들이 콜럼버스에 정착하여 도시의 한국인 인구가 증가하고 있다고 말했다.
콜럼버스 주립대학교에서는 약 5%의 교수진이 한국 출신으로, 교육 분야에서 한국 사회의 강한 존재감을 보여준다. 올해 초, 대학은 한국학의 깊은 이해를 증진하고 조지아-한국 경제 파트너십을 강화하기 위해 콜럼버스 주립대학교 내 한국 연구소를 설립하였다.
대학은 또한 다섯 개의 한국 대학과 파트너십을 형성하여 다양한 교류 기회를 마련하였다. 이러한 프로그램의 일환으로 전남대학교의 피아노 학생들이 올해 초 콜럼버스 주립대학교의 슈워브 음악 학교를 방문하여 2주간 마스터 클래스 레지던시를 진행하였다.
헨더슨 시장은 콜럼버스-진주 파트너십이 자신의 도시가 더 발전할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 모색할 기회를 제공했다고 밝혔다.
“이 자매도시 관계의 가장 흥미로운 점은 진주와 콜럼버스 모두 우리가 정말로 탐색하고 싶어하는 것이라는 외부 인정을 하고 있다는 점이다”고 그는 말했다.
