Daesung Group, an energy and environment conglomerate, held the 2025 Daesung Haegang Science Forum in Seoul on Tuesday, focusing on the latest biotechnology innovations in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
This year marks the eighth edition of the annual forum, which explored the theme “Bio-Innovation in the AI Era.” The event brought together experts and industry leaders to discuss the convergence of AI and biotechnology and their future development trajectory.
During the forum, Lee Sang-yup, vice president for research at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, delivered a keynote speech titled “AI for Biological Engineering.” He shared practical strategies and case studies on the application of AI in biological engineering research and development.
University of Toronto professor Philip Kim presented on protein engineering with AI, while Kakao Healthcare CEO Hwang Hee discussed the role of AI and big data in driving innovation in digital health care.
Daesung Group Chairman Kim Young-hoon emphasized the potential of AI and biotechnology convergence, stating, “The convergence of AI and biotechnology is expected to bring innovative and disruptive technologies to the field of life sciences.” He expressed hope that these advancements could help realize humanity’s dream of life extension and enhance Korea’s national competitiveness in biotechnology.
Daesung Group has been making strategic investments in AI and biotechnology through its subsidiary, Daesung Private Equity. Among its portfolio companies, 1STBIO is improving the accuracy of novel drug development using AI and has recently partnered with Nvidia for an AI-driven drug discovery model. Another portfolio firm, Qureator, has developed a technology that integrates organ-on-a-chip and AI to accurately replicate human disease environments, significantly reducing clinical trial failure rates.

올해로 여덟 번째를 맞이한 연례 포럼은 “AI 시대의 생명 혁신”이라는 주제로 AI와 생명공학의 융합 및 미래 발전 방향에 대한 전문가와 산업 리더들의 통찰을 공유하는 자리가 되었다.
포럼에서 한국과학기술원 연구부총장 이상엽은 “생물공학을 위한 AI”라는 제목으로 기조연설을 하였다. 그는 생물공학 연구 및 개발에서 AI가 어떻게 활용되고 있는지를 보여주는 실용적인 전략과 사례를 소개했다.
토론토 대학교의 필립 김 교수는 AI를 활용한 단백질 공학에 대한 발표를 진행하였고, 카카오는헬스케어 CEO 황희는 AI와 빅데이터가 디지털 헬스케어 혁신을 어떻게 이끄는지에 대해 논의했다.
대성그룹 김영훈 회장은 포럼의 개막사를 통해 “AI와 생명공학의 융합은 생명 과학 분야에 혁신적이고 파괴적인 기술을 가져올 것으로 기대된다”고 말했다.
그는 “이러한 발전을 통해 인류의 생명 연장의 꿈을 실현하는 데 한 걸음 더 다가가며, 한국의 독자 생명공학을 통해 국가 경쟁력을 강화할 수 있기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다.

포트폴리오 기업 중 1STBIO는 AI를 활용하여 신약 개발의 정확성을 향상시켰으며, 최근에는 차량 AI 기반 신약 발굴 모델에 대해 Nvidia와 협력 관계를 구축하였다. 또 다른 포트폴리오 기업인 큐레이터는 인체 질환 환경을 정밀하게 재현하는 오르간 온 어 칩과 AI를 결합한 기술을 도입하여 임상 시험의 실패율을 상당히 줄였다.
