As the regular season draws to a close in Korean baseball, the postseason landscape is becoming increasingly clear, with several teams nearing elimination.
The LG Twins and Hanwha Eagles have secured the top two positions in the 10-team Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), while the competition for the remaining three postseason spots intensifies.
The SSG Landers hold third place with a record of 70-62-4, leading the Samsung Lions (70-66-2) by two games. The Lions are marginally ahead of the KT Wiz (69-66-4), who are positioned in fifth place.
The Lotte Giants (65-67-6) trail the Wiz by 2.5 games, followed closely by the NC Dinos (64-67-6) in seventh place, a half game back.
The Kia Tigers, reigning champions of the 2024 Korean Series, find themselves on the brink of elimination at 62-71-4, needing a win from the Wiz to stay in contention, as they trail by six games with only seven games left to play.
The Landers’ magic number for securing a postseason slot stands at three, while the Lions and Wiz each need four more wins to guarantee their spots.
The KBO postseason will initiate with the wild card series between the fourth and fifth seeds, where the higher seed will have two opportunities to advance, while the lower seed must win two consecutive games.
The third-place team will receive a bye into the best-of-five first round, to face the wild card winner, while the first-round victor will compete against the second-ranked team in the best-of-five second round. The champion of that series will proceed to the Korean Series against the regular-season winner.
The Landers have the largest number of remaining games, totaling eight, including two against the Wiz. The Lions are set for a favorable schedule, facing teams below .500 in all six of their final matches, including the Tigers, Giants, and last-place Kiwoom Heroes.
The Wiz’s upcoming schedule involves games against the Eagles once and the Landers twice, leaving them with five games left in the season.
The Giants have struggled significantly in the latter part of the season. After entering the All-Star break in third place with a 47-39-3 record, they were within four games of first place on August 3. However, they suffered a streak of 12 consecutive losses later in the month and recorded the second-worst performance in the second half with an 18-28-3 record.
Having last reached the postseason in 2017, the Giants must win at least five of their six remaining games, combined with losses from both the Lions and Wiz, to remain in contention.
The Tigers have performed even worse than the Giants since the All-Star break, posting a record of 17-31-1. The absence of reigning league MVP Kim Do-yeong for most of the season due to hamstring injuries has hindered their performance, despite an initial strong showing in June.
