After logging 2,169 games in the regular season over 19 years in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Son Ah-seop of the Hanwha Eagles is finally playing in his first Korean Series.
A midseason trade from the NC Dinos, combined with the Eagles' surge up the standings, made it possible for Son to arrive on the biggest stage in the KBO at age 37.
Despite the significance of the occasion, Son stated that he did not feel a heightened sense of emotion. "We just played a postseason round to get here, and I didn't feel any difference," Son said before the Eagles hosted the LG Twins in Game 3 of the Korean Series at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark. "This has felt like a continuation of the previous series."
One major difference for Son and the Eagles has been their offensive performance. The Eagles defeated the Samsung Lions 11-2 in their deciding Game 5 last Friday, but they have only scored seven runs combined while losing the first two games of the Korean Series.
In Game 2, the Eagles scored four times in the first inning but managed just one more run over the next eight innings. Son was moved from his usual leadoff spot to the No. 6 position for the second game but was returned to the top of the lineup for Wednesday's game. He has batted 2-for-8 with a double so far.
"We have a really good lineup and it will be important for me as the leadoff man to get on base as often as possible," Son said. "The guys batting behind me are all swinging hot bats. So I want to provide some energy ahead of them and celebrate hits to fire up my teammates."
After the Eagles dropped the first two games on the road, Son expressed eagerness to play in front of his home fans. "There are times when your best efforts don't lead to the results you want, and it can be frustrating because you can't really control that," he said. "But the vibe is still great in our clubhouse and our young players are not intimidated at all. Now that we're back home, we want to turn the tide of the series and build some momentum here."

NC 다이노스에서의 중반기 트레이드와 한화 이글스의 순위 상승이 손이 37세의 나이에 KBO의 가장 큰 무대에 오를 수 있도록 만들었다.
첫 한국 시리즈 경기, 혹은 첫 타석이 손에게 특별하게 느껴졌을 것이라는 추측이 있을 수 있지만, 지명 타자는 수요일에 그 반대라고 말했다.
“우리는 여기 오기 위해 포스트시즌 경기를 치렀고, 특별한 감정은 느끼지 않았다”라고 손은 수요일 대전 한화생명 야구장에서 LG 트윈스를 상대하는 한국 시리즈 3경기를 앞두고 밝혔다. “이번 시리즈는 이전 시리즈의 연속처럼 느껴진다.”
손과 이글스가 앞선 시리즈와 다른 점 중 하나는 공격력이다. 이글스는 지난 금요일 삼성 라이온즈와의 결정전 5경기에서 11-2로 승리했지만, 한국 시리즈 첫 두 경기에서 총 7점밖에 득점하지 못했다.
월요일 2차전에서 이글스는 1회에만 4점을 뽑았지만, 이후 8이닝에서 단 1점만 추가했다.
손은 2차전에서 보통의 리드오프 자리에서 6번 타순으로 내려갔지만, 김경문 감독은 수요일 경기를 위해 다시 손을 1번 타순으로 올렸다. 손은 현재까지 8타수 2안타(1중)를 기록하고 있다.
“우리 라인업은 정말 좋고, 내가 리드오프맨으로서 가능한 한 자주 출루하는 것이 중요하다”고 손은 말했다. “내 뒤에 있는 타자들은 모두 방망이가 뜨겁기 때문에, 그들에게 에너지를 제공하고, 안타가 나올 때마다 동료들의 기를 북돋아 주고 싶다.”
이글스가 원정에서 첫 두 경기를 패배한 후, 손은 홈 팬들 앞에서 경기를 치르는 것이 기다려졌다고 말했다.
“가장 최선을 다했지만 원하는 결과를 얻지 못할 때가 있고, 그것은 좌절감을 줄 수 있다. 왜냐하면 그걸 통제할 수 없기 때문이다”라고 손은 말했다. “하지만 우리 클럽하우스의 분위기는 여전히 좋고, 젊은 선수들도 전혀 위축되지 않았다. 이제 우리가 돌아왔으니 시리즈의 흐름을 바꾸고 이곳에서 모멘텀을 쌓고 싶다.”
