During his keynote address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Trump indicated that a long-delayed trade agreement with Seoul might soon be finalized, while commending Korea for its economic transformation and democratic achievements.
Trump remarked that the U.S. shipbuilding industry has lagged due to years of stagnation, recalling that the U.S. was once the leading shipbuilder globally during World War II. He expressed optimism about revitalizing the industry in collaboration with South Korea.
He attributed the decline of the shipbuilding sector to the previous administration's mismanagement and expressed confidence that Philly Shipyard, now owned by Hanwha Ocean, would thrive. Trump emphasized the strong partnership between the U.S. and Korea, describing it as a "special bond."
In his address, Trump also lauded Korea's evolution into a global economic and technological leader, calling it a model for other nations. He noted that the world observes Korea's achievements, although many do not fully comprehend them.
Regarding trade, Trump announced that the long-stalled agreement with Korea would be finalized "very soon," referring to the Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy as "a tough man." He highlighted recent agreements signed with other countries during his trip, expressing optimism about the impending deal with Korea.
While a July agreement reduced U.S. tariffs on Korean goods from 25 percent to 15 percent, the implementation of this reduction remains pending. Ongoing negotiations are reportedly focused on the nature of investments, with the U.S. seeking direct cash investments and Korea advocating for loans and loan guarantees.
Trump also mentioned upcoming discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing confidence in reaching a beneficial agreement for both nations.
Following his speech, Trump met with President Lee Jae Myung, marking reciprocal visits between the two leaders within 147 days of Lee's administration.
