Officials from OpenAI have visited Samsung Electronics' semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Korea following a partnership agreement related to the Stargate project, sources reported on Thursday.
During the visit, six research and development (R&D) staff from OpenAI toured Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek Campus, the largest chip plant in Gyeonggi Province, on Wednesday. This facility is responsible for producing approximately half of the company's dynamic random access memory (DRAM) wafers.
The visit came after a letter of intent (LOI) was signed between Samsung's Chairman and OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer to collaborate on various initiatives, including chips, data centers, and cloud computing.
As part of the agreement, Samsung Electronics will provide OpenAI with a consistent supply of low-power memory chips to support the Stargate project. OpenAI is anticipated to need up to 900,000 wafers of high-performance DRAM each month, highlighting the significant scale of this partnership.

이 방문은 삼성전자 이재용 회장과 오픈AI CEO 샘 올트먼 간에 칩, 데이터 센터, 클라우드 컴퓨팅 등 분야에서 협력하기 위한 의향서(LOI) 서명 이후 이루어졌다.
계약에 따라 삼성전자는 오픈AI의 스타게이트 프로젝트를 위해 안정적인 저전력 메모리 칩 공급을 지원할 예정이다.
오픈AI는 매달 최대 900,000개의 고성능 DRAM 웨이퍼가 필요할 것으로 예상되며, 이는 파트너십의 규모를 강조한다.
