Prosecutors announced on Thursday that they would not pursue charges against former officials of the past Moon Jae-in administration in the reinvestigation of alleged election interference during the 2018 mayoral race in Ulsan.
The case revolves around allegations that former presidential officials coordinated efforts to support former Ulsan Mayor Song Cheol-ho, who is closely associated with Moon, in winning the election.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office stated that it would discontinue the case against former senior presidential secretary for civil affairs Cho Kuk, former presidential chief of staff Im Jong-seok, and three others, including Song.
This decision follows earlier moves by prosecutors to dismiss charges against Cho and Im due to insufficient evidence. However, a reinvestigation commenced in January of the previous year after a new complaint was lodged by the conservative People Power Party.
Additionally, prosecutors confirmed that they would not seek charges against Moon after examining allegations of election law violations and abuse of power related to the case.
The announcement follows a decision by the Supreme Court in August, which upheld a lower court's acquittal of Song and others who had been indicted for election law violations.

서울중앙지방검찰청은 조국 전 민정수석, 임종석 전 대통령 비서실장, 그리고 송 전 시장 등 3명을 포함한 사건에 대해 기소를 취하하겠다고 발표했다.
검찰은 이전에 조국과 임종석에 대한 기소를 증거 부족으로 기각했지만, 지난해 1월 보수 정당인 국민의힘이 새로운 고소장을 제출하면서 사건 재조사를 시작했다.
검찰은 사건 관련의 선거법 위반 및 권한 남용 혐의에 대한 고소를 접수한 후 문 대통령에 대한 기소도 하지 않겠다고 밝혔다.
이 결정은 8월 대법원이 송 전 시장 및 선거법 위반으로 기소된 기타 피고인들에 대한 1심의 무죄를 확정한 이후 내려졌다.
