The Seoul International Music Festival (SIMF), one of Korea’s prominent classical music festivals, is set to return for its 17th edition later this month, featuring a program inspired by dance.
Artistic director Ryu Jae-joon expressed his desire to bring joy and happiness through the festival, which is reflected in this year's dance-themed music selection, as stated during a press conference in Seoul.
SIMF, alongside the Tongyeong International Music Festival and Music in PyeongChang, is recognized as a leading classical music event in the country, with each festival organizing its own orchestras for the duration of the events.
The festival will kick off on October 30 at Lotte Concert Hall, featuring works such as Astor Piazzolla’s “Histoire du Tango,” arranged for orchestra, as well as Mozart’s Divertimento No. 17 in D major, Haydn and Rosetti’s Concerto for Two Horns, M.C56Q, and Saglietti’s Suite for French Horn and String Quartet.
Ryu emphasized the importance of arrangement in classical music, comparing it to the role of translation in literature, highlighting that attendees will experience many classical works in new arrangements.
The second day will focus on dance-inspired compositions by German composers Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schubert, including Beethoven’s Sextet, Op. 71, Mendelssohn’s String Octet, Op. 20, MWV R20, and Schubert’s String Quintet, D. 956.
On the third day, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts will feature Slavic composers such as Glinka, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, with Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” performed in an ensemble arrangement.
On November 2, the concert at Seoul Arts Center will showcase string repertoire, including Johann Strauss II’s “Voices of Spring Waltz” arranged for string orchestra, Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, Op. 22, and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, Op. 48. The following day will be dedicated to Beethoven’s five sonata works for piano and cello, performed by cellist Gary Hoffman and pianist David Selig at Seoul Arts Center.
The festival will conclude on November 6 with the Korean premiere of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu’s “A String Around Autumn,” alongside Bruch’s Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, Op. 88, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Op. 45.
Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits will lead the orchestra at Seoul Arts Center, and the finale will commemorate the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, established in 1965.

통영 국제 음악제와 평창 음악제와 함께 SIMF는 한국의 주요 클래식 음악 행사로 여겨지며, 세 가지 축제 모두 축제 기간 동안 활동하는 자체 오케스트라를 운영한다.
10월 30일 롯데 콘서트 홀에서 열리는 개막 콘서트에서는 아스토르 피아졸라의 “택사스 이야기”를 오케스트라를 위한 편곡으로 선보이며, 모차르트의 D장조 Divertimento No. 17, 하이든과 로세티의 두 호른을 위한 협주곡 M.C56Q, 그리고 사글리에트의 프렌치 호른 및 현악 4중주를 위한 모음곡이 포함된다.
류 감독은 "한강이 노벨 문학상을 수상하는 데 있어 번역이 중요했듯이, 클래식 음악에 있어 편곡 또한 중요하다"고 전하며, 새롭게 편곡된 훌륭한 클래식 작품들을 많이 들을 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.
축제의 두 번째 날은 베토벤, 멘델스존, 슈베르트 등 세 명의 독일 작곡가와 그들의 댄스에서 영감을 받은 작품들에 초점을 맞춘다. 베토벤의 세크스텟 Op. 71, 멘델스존의 현악 8중주 Op. 20, MWV R20, 그리고 슈베르트의 현악 5중주 D. 956가 연주될 예정이다.
세 번째 날에는 세종문화회관에서 글린카, 스트라빈스키, 차이코프스키 등 슬라브 작곡가들을 조명하며, 스트라빈스키의 “봄의 제전”이 앙상블 편곡으로 공연된다.
11월 2일 서울예술의전당에서 열리는 콘서트에서는 요한 슈트라우스 2세의 “봄의 목소리 왈츠”가 현악 오케스트라 편곡으로 연주되며, 드보르작의 현악을 위한 세레나데 Op. 22과 차이코프스키의 현악 세레나데 Op. 48이 포함된다. 다음 날은 피아노와 첼로를 위한 베토벤의 다섯 개의 소나타 작품이 첼리스트 개리 호프만과 피아니스트 데이비드 셀리그에 의해 서울예술의전당에서 공연된다.
축제는 11월 6일 일본 작곡가 다케미츠 토루의 “가을을 둘러싼 현”의 한국 초연과 브루흐의 바이올린, 비올라 및 오케스트라를 위한 협주곡 Op. 88, 그리고 라흐마니노프의 관현악 댄스 Op. 45로 마무리된다.
우크라이나 출신 지휘자 키릴 카라빗스가 서울예술의전당에서 오케스트라를 이끌며, 피날레는 1965년 수립된 한일 정상 외교 관계 60주년을 기념하게 된다.
