Actor Yim Si-wan is known for tackling diverse roles, but his latest challenge as lead in the Netflix thriller "Mantis" pushed his boundaries.
Yim spoke with unwavering dedication about his performance, saying that seeing the final action scenes has inspired him to get even better at the action genre.
"It’s a professional thing, but I always watch my work thinking I could have done better," Yim told a reporter at a cafe in Seoul on Tuesday.
"I felt that most about the action scenes this time. I prepared diligently, including taking kickboxing lessons and attending action school, but seeing the final product left me with the regret that I could have performed the action even better."
The film, a spin-off of the hit Netflix film "Kill Boksoon," features Yim as Han-ul, a top-tier contract killer who fights using dual sickles.
"Mantis" expands the universe of "Kill Boksoon," this time focusing on a new generation of assassins vying for the top spot in the killer organization M.K. ENT.
Yim's character is an A-list killer returning from vacation to face his trainee contemporary and rival, Jae-yi, and the retired legend Dok-go.
Yim revealed that his connection to the character began casually while working with director Byun Sung-hyun on "Kill Boksoon.”
“Director Byun casually told me that if there was ever a spin-off, I would be the one to play Mantis," Yim recalled. "It felt like fate had chosen me, and I just waited for that destiny."
To play Han-ul, Yim focused on creating a distinctive, low-class energy, describing the character as needing to be "a bit vulgar, with a rough and showy style."
He also offered a critique of his killer's overconfidence. "I sometimes think Han-ul is a bit too arrogant for his skill," he laughed. "He talks about being a genius, but if you look at his fights, he’s not totally dominant."
Yim also addressed the film's unexpected focus on the relationship between Han-ul and Jae-yi.
"The relationship between Han-ul and Jae-yi definitely held feelings of love, so it came out in the film," he said. "I believe his focus was less on competition and more on the fact that she was the precious person who was the first to accept him."
Despite his success as an actor, Yim remains firmly committed to his musical career. He debuted as a member of idol band ZE:A in 2010.
"I have never given up on being a singer," he said. "If I were to abandon or deny my singing career, it would feel like I was denying my entire 20s, which I don’t want to do."
He announced plans to release a new album, describing the songs as medium-tempo pop that are easy to listen to and catchy. He said the album, scheduled to be released within this year, is his own way of connecting with fans.
"My ultimate goal is to connect with fans through music, especially since acting limits the opportunities to do so," he said.
Looking ahead, Yim plans to seek out a romantic comedy or a similarly "bright and cheerful" role to contrast with his recent dark characters, including as Myung-gi in the Netflix series “Squid Game.”
He added that his commitment to continuous preparation is key for an actor.
"I believe that an actor must always be prepared," he added. "That means everything from staying in shape for action roles to studying English, which I see as a 'necessity, not an option' for a global career,” Yim said.

이번 영화는 넷플릭스의 히트작 “킬 북순”의 스핀오프 작품으로, 임은 쌍 낫을 사용하는 톱급 계약 살인자 한울 역을 맡는다.
“맨티스”는 “킬 북순”의 세계관을 확장하며, 이번에는 살인자 조직 M.K. ENT의 정점에 서기 위해 경쟁하는 새로운 세대의 암살자들에 초점을 맞춘다.
임의 캐릭터는 휴가에서 돌아온 A급 살인자로, 그의 훈련동료이자 라이벌인 재이(박규영)와 은퇴한 전설 독고(조우진)와 대면하게 된다.
임은 한울 캐릭터와의 연결이 “킬 북순”의 변영현 감독과 작업하면서 자연스럽게 시작되었다고 밝혔다.
“변 감독이 스핀오프가 생기면 제가 맨티스를 맡게 될 것이라고 가볍게 이야기했어요,” 임은 회상했다. “그것이 운명처럼 느껴졌고, 그 운명을 기다렸습니다.”
한울을 연기하기 위해 임은 독특하고 저급한 에너지를 창출하는 데 집중하며, 캐릭터를 "약간 천박하고 거칠고 화려한 스타일"로 묘사했다.
그는 자신의 암살자의 지나친 자신감에 대해서도 비판했다. “가끔 한울이 자신의 실력에 비해 조금 너무 자만한다고 생각해요.”라고 그는 웃으며 말했다. “그는 자신이 천재라고 이야기하지만, 그의 싸움을 보면 완전히 지배적이지는 않죠.”
임은 영화에서 한울과 재이의 관계가 예상치 못하게 집중되어 있음을 언급했다.
“한울과 재이의 관계에는 분명 사랑의 감정이 있었기 때문에 영화에 잘 드러났습니다.”라고 그는 말했다. “그의 초점은 경쟁보다는 자신을 처음 받아들여 준 소중한 사람이라는 점에 더 있었던 것 같습니다.”

배우로서의 성공에도 불구하고 임은 자신의 음악 경력을 고수하고 있다. 그는 2010년 아이돌 그룹 ZE:A의 멤버로 데뷔했다.
“저는 가수가 되는 것을 결코 포기하지 않았습니다.”라고 그는 말했다. “만약 제가 노래 커리어를 포기하거나 부정한다면, 제 20대를 전부 부정하는 것과 같아서 원하지 않습니다.”
그는 새로운 앨범을 발매할 계획을 발표하며, 그 노래들을 듣기 쉬운 중간 템포의 팝으로 설명했다. 그는 올해 내에 발매될 예정인 앨범이 팬들과 연결하는 자신의 방식이라고 덧붙였다.

앞으로 임은 최근의 어두운 캐릭터들과 대조되는 로맨틱 코미디나 비슷한 “밝고 경쾌한” 역할을 찾을 계획이다. 그는 지속적인 준비가 배우에게 핵심이라고 덧붙였다.
“저는 배우가 항상 준비되어 있어야 한다고 믿습니다.”라고 그는 덧붙였다. “그것은 액션 역할을 위한 체력 유지부터 시작하여, 글로벌 경력에 필수적이라고 생각하는 영어 공부까지 포함됩니다.”
