Korea and Malaysia have signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in their arms industries, aiming to elevate their comprehensive strategic partnership in the defense sector, according to Seoul's state arms procurement agency.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the minister of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Malaysian defense chief during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur.
The MOU outlines plans for both countries to improve cooperation in arms procurement, as well as collaborate on research and development of defense technologies and joint production of military equipment.
Seok Jong-gun, the DAPA minister, emphasized that Korea's role would extend beyond merely exporting weapons systems, aiming to strengthen Malaysia's defense capabilities and advance its arms industry as a "genuine partner," while also contributing to regional peace and stability in Southeast Asia.
Korea's defense collaboration with Malaysia dates back to 1993 with a deal to supply K200 armored vehicles, followed by a $920 million agreement in 2023 to export 18 FA-50 light attack aircraft.
This latest MOU brings the total number of arms cooperation agreements Korea has signed with various nations to 52, as it aspires to become the world's fourth-largest defense exporter.
Additionally, this agreement marks the second MOU on arms cooperation that Malaysia has established with a foreign country. Just last week, the two nations signed a deal to mutually recognize the airworthiness certification of their military aircraft, marking Korea's first such agreement with an Asian nation.

방산조달청(DAPA)의 석종건 청장과 말레이시아의 국방 수장인 모하메드 칼레드 노르딘이 쿠알라룸푸르에서 열린 동남아국가연합(ASEAN) 정상 회담을 계기로 양해각서(MOU)에 서명했다.
양해각서에 따라 두 국가는 무기 조달 협력 강화를 넘어 방위 기술의 연구 개발 및 물자의 공동 생산을 위한 협력에도 힘쓸 계획이다.
석 청장은 “무기 시스템의 수출을 넘어서서 (한국이) 말레이시아의 방 دفاع 능력 강화 및 방산 산업 발전에 ‘진정한 파트너’로 기여하고, 동남아시아 지역의 평화와 안정을 위해 노력할 것”이라고 말했다.
한국은 1993년 말레이시아에 K200 장갑차를 공급하기 위한 계약을 체결한 데 이어, 2023년에는 18대의 FA-50 경공격기를 수출하기로 9억 2천만 달러 규모의 계약을 체결했다.
이번 협약을 통해 한국은 총 52개국과 무기 협력을 위한 양해각서를 체결했으며, 세계 4위 방산 수출국으로 자리매김하기 위한 노력을 지속하고 있다.
이번은 말레이시아가 외국과 체결한 두 번째 무기 협력 양해각서이다.
지난 주 두 국가는 군용 항공기의 비행 적합성 인증을 상호 인정하는 계약을 체결했으며, 이는 서울이 아시아 국가와 체결한 첫 번째 사례이다.
