Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) has increased its security alert level and enhanced airport operations to ensure the safe hosting of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, as announced by the airport operator on Tuesday.
This decision comes in light of Korea's heightened readiness surrounding this week’s significant international event in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
The aviation security level has been upgraded to the third tier in its five-tier system, indicating an increased state of alert.
Effective through November 1, the new measures include more rigorous security screenings. Passengers can expect longer boarding times due to expanded pat-downs and random bag checks. Additionally, new X-ray screening requirements will necessitate that women remove shoes with heels over 3.5 centimeters, citing potential safety concerns.
To mitigate inconvenience from these heightened security measures, IIAC has deployed additional security personnel and extended operating hours. Comprehensive onsite inspections will be conducted in collaboration with police and government agencies.
An APEC information desk will be established at the airport, and extra aircraft parking stands will be allocated for high-profile attendees. Furthermore, the number of bus routes to Gyeongju will be increased to accommodate the influx of travelers.
IIAC remains committed to providing a seamless experience for all passengers during the APEC events. The operator emphasized the importance of these security measures in maintaining Korea’s reputation for safety and efficiency during high-profile international events.
“While the tightened security may cause delays for passengers, we appreciate their understanding, as it reinforces Korea’s commitment to protocol adherence,” IIAC stated.

새로운 X-ray 검색 요구 사항에 따라 여성은 3.5cm 이상의 굽이 있는 신발을 벗어야 하며, 이는 잠재적인 안전 위협 때문이라고 밝혔다.
IIAC는 강화된 경계로 인한 불편을 최소화하기 위해 추가적인 보안 인력을 배치하고 운영 시간을 연장했다고 전했다.
경찰 및 정부 기관과의 종합 현장 점검도 시행될 예정이다.
공항은 APEC 정보 데스크를 설치하고 고위 인사들을 위한 추가 비행기 주차 공간을 확보할 계획이다.
APEC 개최 도시인 경주로 가는 버스 노선도 증가할 예정이다.
