SK Innovation will host the Asia Pacific LNG Connect session on Friday during the APEC CEO Summit, organized by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
The session will focus on the stability and sustainability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply in Northeast Asia, the world's largest LNG-consuming region, and its significance in addressing the increasing power demand in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
The APEC CEO Summit, taking place from Tuesday to Friday in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, is the largest annual business forum in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting around 1,000 global CEOs, academics, and government officials to discuss key economic issues and future directions.
SK Group Senior Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won and SK Innovation E&S President Choo Hyeong-wook will present their vision for a sustainable energy ecosystem during the LNG session. Leaders from ten companies across six countries, including Thailand’s PPT and Japan’s Tokyo Gas, will engage in discussions on energy security, competitiveness, and sustainability, moderated by Keisuke Sadamori of the IEA.
The United States’ role as the world's leading LNG producer in Northeast Asia is anticipated to be a significant discussion point.
Choo emphasized that "LNG plays a critical role in balancing renewable variability, replacing coal, and meeting rising power demand fueled by economic growth and AI innovation across the Asia-Pacific." He added that the session will propose a cooperative model to enhance energy security, supply chain resilience, and regional decarbonization.
The first part of the session will analyze LNG's expanding role as a key energy source that complements nuclear power while replacing coal during the energy transition.
Additionally, Sean Pitt, executive vice president of Santos, which is jointly developing the Barossa gas field with SK Innovation and Japan’s JERA, will present the Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project.
The second part of the session will feature Choo discussing his company’s experience in establishing a stable LNG portfolio, emphasizing the competitiveness and flexibility of U.S. LNG contracts.
Continental Resources founder Harold Hamm will address the technological innovations, policy support, and infrastructure investments that have positioned the U.S. as the world’s largest LNG exporter.
The discussion will also explore how abundant natural gas resources have stimulated the growth of the American digital economy through cost advantages and a stable supply. Panelists, including NextDecade Executive Vice President Ariel Handler and Freeport LNG Vice President Nathan Will, will underscore LNG’s strategic role in meeting surging power demand driven by AI data center expansion.
A pre-event will be held on Thursday in Busan, bringing together industry leaders ahead of the session.

동북아시아에서 세계 최대 LNG 생산국으로서 미국의 전략적 역할이 주요 주제로 다뤄질 것으로 보인다.
주형욱 사장은 “LNG는 재생 가능 자원의 변동성을 조절하고 석탄을 대체하며 아시아-태평양 지역의 경제 성장과 AI 혁신으로 인한 전력 수요 증가를 충족하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다”고 말했다.
“이번 세션은 에너지 안보, 공급망 회복력 및 지역 탈탄소화를 증대시키기 위한 협력 모델을 제안할 것이다.”
이 세션의 첫 번째 부분에서는 LNG가 에너지 전환에서 원자력과 석탄을 대체하는 주요 에너지원으로서의 역할을 확장하는 내용을 살펴볼 것이다.
또한, SK이노베이션과 일본의 JERA가 공동 개발하는 바로사 가스전의 부사장인 션 피트가 무음바 탄소 포집 및 저장(CCS) 프로젝트를 소개할 예정이다.
세션의 두 번째 부분에서는 주형욱 사장이 미국 LNG 계약의 경쟁력과 유연성을 기반으로 한 안정적인 LNG 포트폴리오 구축 경험을 공유할 것이다.
콘티넨탈 리소스 설립자 해롤드 햄은 미국이 세계 최대 LNG 수출국으로 성장하게 한 기술 혁신, 정책 지원 및 인프라 투자에 대해 논의할 것이다.
이번 논의는 풍부한 천연가스 자원이 어떻게 미국 디지털 경제의 성장에 기여했는지를 비용 우위와 안정적인 공급 측면에서 살펴볼 것이다. 넥스트디케이드의 부사장 아리엘 핸들러와 프리포트 LNG의 부사장 네이선 윌을 포함한 패널들이 AI 데이터 센터 확장에 의해 촉발된 전력 수요 증가를 충족하는 LNG의 전략적 역할을 강조할 것이다.
세션에 앞서 목요일 부산에서 산업 리더들이 모이는 사전 행사도 개최될 예정이다.
