Montana Governor Greg Gianforte met with Korean industry leaders and government officials on Monday to explore potential synergies between Montana's business-friendly policies and Korea's industrial capabilities.
The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) hosted a welcome reception for Gianforte, which included over 40 representatives from Montana’s state government, major local companies, and academic institutions. This event marked the largest business delegation from Montana to Korea.
Attendees from the Korean side included officials from prominent companies such as Hyundai Motor, Hyosung Heavy Industries, CJ, Poongsan, Pan Ocean, as well as quantum technology firms like IBM Korea and Qunova.
The gathering aimed to foster exchange and networking opportunities to enhance economic cooperation between Korea and Montana. In 2024, Korea emerged as the second-largest trading partner for Montana, importing over $335 million in industrial machinery, coal, beef, and wheat.
While Montana is traditionally recognized for its mineral and agricultural sectors, it has been shifting its economic focus towards future-oriented industries in recent years. In 2023, the state received a “Tech Hub” designation from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, highlighting its emphasis on photonic and smart sensor technology.
This economic transformation aligns with Gianforte’s entrepreneurial background, which includes founding IT companies such as Brightwork Development and RightNow Technologies.
FKI Chairman Ryu Jin remarked on the potential for cooperation, stating, "If Korea’s advanced technology and industrial capabilities meet Montana’s open policies and abundant resources, we can create new success stories."
Prior to the reception, Gianforte met with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok to discuss practical measures for enhancing bilateral relations. During their meeting, Kim emphasized the importance of ensuring smooth U.S. entry and local activities for Korean citizens as vital to fostering a stable investment environment and accelerating human exchanges. He requested that the Montana state government focus more on improving the U.S. visa system.
Gianforte acknowledged Korea as one of Montana’s largest trading partners and expressed a desire for deeper cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture related to coal and flour, as well as advanced industries such as semiconductors, quantum technology, optics, and supply chains.

한국 측에서는 현대자동차, 효성중공업, CJ, 풍산, 팬오션 등과 IBM 코리아, 쿠노바와 같은 양자 기술 회사의 40명 이상의 관계자들이 참석했다.
이번 행사는 한국과 몬태나 간의 경제 협력을 확대하기 위한 교류 및 네트워킹을 촉진하기 위해 조직되었다. 한국은 2024년 몬태나 주의 두 번째로 큰 무역 파트너로, 산업 기계, 석탄, 소고기, 밀 등을 통해 3억 3천 5백만 달러 이상을 구매했다.
몬태나는 광물 및 농업 산업으로 유명하지만, 최근 몇 년 간 미래 지향적 산업으로 경제 구조를 전환하고 있다. 2023년에는 광학 및 스마트 센서 기술에 집중하여 미국 경제 개발청으로부터 "기술 허브" 지정받았다.
이러한 변화는 IT 기업인 브라이트워크 개발과 라이트나우 테크놀로지스를 창립한 기업가인 제안포르체의 배경과도 일치한다.
한국의 선진 기술과 산업 능력이 몬태나의 개방 정책 및 풍부한 자원과 만나면 새로운 성공 사례를 창출할 수 있다고 FKI 회장 류진이 강조했다.
리셉션 몇 시간 전, 제안포르체는 김민석 국무총리를 만날 기회도 가졌으며, 양국 관계 개선을 위한 실질적인 방안에 대한 의견을 나누었다.
회의 중 김 총리는 "미국에의 원활한 입국과 우리 국민의 지역 활동 보장은 안정적인 투자 환경을 조성하고 인적 교류를 가속화하는 데 중요하다"며 몬태나 주정부가 미국 비자 시스템 개선에 더 많은 관심을 기울여줄 것을 요청했다.
제안포르체는 한국을 몬태나의 주요 무역 파트너 중 하나로 인식하며, 석탄과 밀을 포함한 농업 및 반도체, 양자 기술, 광학, 공급망과 같은 고급 산업 분야에서 더 깊은 실질적 협력을 기대한다고 덧붙였다.
