Samsung Electronics is set to utilize its in-house application processor (AP) Exynos 2600 for several variants of the upcoming Galaxy S26 family, indicating renewed confidence in its foundry capabilities.
Industry sources reported on Monday that Samsung has decided to implement the Exynos 2600 AP for the S26 series in various markets, marking a return to its two-chip strategy.
Officials from Samsung Electronics declined to comment on this development.
In recent years, Samsung has paired its Exynos chips with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors for the Galaxy S series, with the exception of the S23 and S25 series. The S23 series exclusively used the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 after the cancellation of mass production for the Exynos 2300, while the S25 series relied solely on the Snapdragon 8 Elite due to low yield rates of the Exynos 2500.
The exclusion of the Exynos 2500 was a significant setback for Samsung’s foundry and chip design divisions, which have faced accumulated losses that have impacted the overall profitability of the company’s semiconductor business.
During a second-quarter earnings call in July, the company stated its intention to enhance the competitiveness of the Exynos lineup, with plans to have it featured in flagship smartphones by 2026.
While it is unclear how many models in the Galaxy S26 lineup will incorporate the Exynos 2600, historical trends suggest that the chip is likely to be used in devices sold in Korea and Europe.
The reintroduction of the Exynos chip to the Galaxy S series is attributed to improvements in chipset performance and foundry yield rates. An unidentified source cited by Yonhap News Agency noted that the chipset’s neural processing unit outperformed comparable Apple processors by six times.
Uncertainty remains regarding the adoption of the Exynos 2600 for the flagship Galaxy S26 Ultra, as Samsung has consistently relied on Qualcomm chips for the top-tier model in the S23 to S25 series.
The Exynos 2600 is anticipated to be manufactured using Samsung’s 2-nanometer process, which is expected to enhance energy efficiency. Reports indicate that the Exynos 2600 has achieved approximately 85 percent of its targeted performance level.
