Amazon's cloud services unit, AWS, experienced an outage on Monday that disrupted several popular applications, including Fortnite and Snapchat, and caused connectivity issues for numerous companies globally.
AWS reported increased "error rates and latencies" across multiple services, stating, "We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery" in its latest update.
This outage marks the first significant internet disruption since last year's incident involving a malfunction that affected technology systems in hospitals, banks, and airports worldwide.
AWS offers on-demand computing power, data storage, and other digital services to a wide range of clients, including companies, governments, and individuals. Several companies reported outages attributed to AWS, including AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood. Perplexity's CEO confirmed the issue on social media, stating, "Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We're working on resolving it."
Amazon's shopping website, Prime Video, and Alexa also faced operational issues, as reported by Downdetector.
Several gaming platforms, including Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans, were affected, along with financial services such as Paypal's Venmo and Chime. The ride-sharing app Lyft also experienced downtime for many users in the U.S.
Messaging app Signal's President confirmed that the platform was impacted by the AWS outage as well.
In the UK, several firms, including Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, and telecom providers Vodafone and BT, reported issues. The country's tax, payments, and customs authority, HMRC, also experienced disruptions.
In contrast, the owner of a prominent social media platform stated that his service continued to operate normally during the outage, without providing further details.
