Son Heung-min and his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) have commenced their Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup Playoffs with a victory.
LAFC, ranked third in the Western Conference, narrowly defeated the sixth-seeded Austin FC 2-1 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Wednesday (local time) during the first match of the playoff series.
The second match of the best-of-three series is scheduled to take place at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, on Sunday.
If the teams each win one match, LAFC will host Austin FC again at BMO Stadium for the decisive game next weekend. In this playoff format, matches that are tied after 90 minutes will proceed directly to penalties to determine the winner, without a 30-minute extra time.
LAFC took an early lead in the 20th minute due to an own goal by Austin FC defender Brendan Hines-Ike. Austin FC equalized in the 63rd minute with a goal from Jon Gallagher, assisted by Owen Wolff.
LAFC regained the lead in the 79th minute with a goal from Nathan Orda, which was initiated by Son's run through the center of the field. Son passed to Denis Bounaga, whose shot deflected off an Austin FC player and went over goalkeeper Brad Stuver. Orda managed to redirect the ball into the net just before it crossed the line.
Son recorded two shots on target and led the team with eight key passes, which are defined as passes that directly lead to shots on goal. Since joining LAFC in August, Son has contributed nine goals and three assists in 10 regular-season matches.
