A person responsible for spreading false rumors about Korean actor Lee Yi-kyung has admitted that the allegations were fabricated, claiming they were merely a "joke." Despite this admission, the actor's reputation has already suffered significant damage.
On Wednesday, the individual, referred to as A, shared two lengthy apology messages on a personal account, confessing that the viral claims had no basis in reality. A wrote, “Hello, everyone in Korea. As some of you may know, I recently uploaded several photos and posts about actor Lee Yi-kyung. It all started as a joke, and I didn’t realize the posts would gain that much attention." A further explained that as more content was created, they began to believe the false narrative themselves and expressed sincere regret for spreading malicious rumors.
A continued, “It started from admiration as a fan but turned into emotional over-identification. What began as fun became too real, and I now feel guilty. If there’s anything I need to take responsibility for, I will. Please understand if my Korean is awkward — I’m German.”
Despite A's apology, experts point out that incidents like this highlight how "just kidding" claims online often do not mitigate the fallout. Initial rumors can leave a lasting impression, and corrective measures rarely fully restore a public figure's reputation once it has been damaged.
Lee’s agency announced on Monday that they are preparing legal action against the dissemination of false information and malicious rumors. “We are calculating the direct and indirect damage caused by false posts circulating on online communities and social media,” stated the agency, emphasizing that all possible legal actions would be pursued.
The agency also disclosed that A had been sending blackmail-like emails demanding money for about five months. Although A previously apologized after the agency issued a warning of legal action, they later contradicted this by releasing new videos, reaffirming the false claims, and promising to provide “additional evidence.”
However, the following day, A deleted the posts and issued a full apology, admitting that all the content had been fabricated “as a joke.”
