Tving's much-anticipated thriller-romance “Dear X” is set to premiere on November 6, showcasing a significant transformation of actor Kim You-jung, who is known for her wholesome child actor image.
This series marks Tving’s first production to stream globally via HBO Max across 17 Asia-Pacific regions, generating considerable buzz ahead of its release.
Directed by Lee Eung-bok, known for acclaimed works such as “Sweet Home” (2020), “Mr. Sunshine” (2018), and “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” (2016), “Dear X” is adapted from a popular webtoon of the same name.
The narrative follows Baek Ah-jin (played by Kim), a woman who hides behind a mask to escape her personal torment while striving for fame. In her relentless pursuit of perfection, she leaves behind those she has hurt, referred to as the “Xs.”
The drama explores the downfall of Korea’s top actress, who conceals a harsh reality behind her beauty, and the tragic love of Yoon Jun-seo (Kim Young-dae), who descends into darkness to protect her. Kim Jae-oh (Kim Do-hoon) serves as Ah-jin’s devoted shadow, connected to her through shared scars.
During a press conference, director Lee reflected on the webtoon, describing it as a dark romantic thriller about a “demon with the face of an angel” and the two guardian angels trying to protect her. He expressed intrigue in Jun-seo’s inner conflict, questioning why he loves a “wicked person.”
Lee emphasized his desire to explore the tenderness of the characters who love and protect Ah-jin, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own moral dilemmas regarding the protagonist.
Kim You-jung, who has transitioned from family-friendly dramas to this darker role, described Ah-jin as “a devil with the face of an angel.” She shared her approach to the character, focusing on the interconnectedness of the story and characters, and how discussions with the director helped her overcome her fears.
“Dear X” aims to transcend a simple revenge narrative, featuring lush cinematography, complex romantic dynamics, and a critique of Korea’s entertainment industry, balancing elements of horror and heartbreak.
Kim noted the importance of subtlety in her performance, aiming to convey emotions through her eyes and leaving space for mystery, allowing the audience to engage with the character's internal struggles.

이 감독은 준서의 내면 독백인 “왜 나는 나쁜 사람을 사랑하지?”라는 질문이 이 프로젝트에 흥미를 느끼게 했다고 말했다.
“왜 독자들이 이렇게 ‘나쁜’ 주인공이 있는 웹툰을 사랑하는지 궁금해서 그것을 탐구하고 싶었다. 강도나 경계에 대한 걱정보다는 아진을 사랑하고 보호하려는 두 사람의 아픈 온유함을 담고 싶었다. 사람들은 그녀를 다양한 시각으로 본다 — 단지 악당으로만 보지 않는다. 관객들이 ‘내가 만약 이랬다면?’ 혹은 ‘이렇게 살 수 있을까?’라는 질문을 던지기를 원한다,”고 말했다.

“웹툰은 정지된 이미지를 활용하기 때문에 각 캐릭터의 본질을 강조하는 데 효과적이다. 감정이 없는 표정과 읽을 수 없는 생각들이 잘 표현되었다. 이를 연기로 어떻게 생명력을 불어넣을지를 곰곰이 생각했다,”고 배우는 밝혔다.
