Korean stocks opened slightly higher on Thursday, following overnight gains on Wall Street after the Federal Reserve decided to keep benchmark interest rates unchanged.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) increased by 8.01 points, or 0.31 percent, reaching 2,581.81 within the first 15 minutes of trading. In the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.7 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.27 percent.
The U.S. central bank's decision to hold key rates steady highlighted concerns regarding potential risks from both higher inflation and unemployment.
In Seoul, shares in the technology, automotive, and battery sectors contributed to the positive market opening. Samsung Electronics saw an increase of 1.1 percent, while its chipmaking competitor, SK Hynix, advanced by 2.52 percent. Hyundai Motor, the leading carmaker, climbed 0.27 percent, and its affiliate Kia added 0.23 percent. Additionally, LG Energy Solution, a major battery manufacturer, rose by 0.31 percent, and POSCO Future M increased by 0.49 percent.
As of 9:15 a.m., the local currency was trading at 1,396.5 won against the U.S. dollar, reflecting an increase of 1.5 won from the previous session.
