Prosecutors announced on Thursday the indictment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol for abuse of power, adding to the legal challenges he faces amid an ongoing trial related to an insurrection charge stemming from a failed martial law attempt.
The indictment was issued without physical detention, with allegations that Yoon misused his authority and obstructed the exercise of rights. This latest development comes as Yoon is already involved in a trial concerning insurrection charges linked to his brief imposition of martial law in December.
In January, prosecutors had previously indicted Yoon for allegedly conspiring with former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and others to incite an insurrection on December 3. This was reportedly done by declaring an unconstitutional state of emergency, despite the lack of any indications of war, armed conflict, or a comparable national crisis.
