South Korea's military reported on Thursday that North Korea's newly launched destroyer, the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon, is likely to require significant time before it can be deployed. This assessment was provided by Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Col. Lee Sung-jun.
The Choe Hyon destroyer was launched on Friday and conducted live-fire tests of its weapon systems for the first time on Monday and Tuesday. Col. Lee indicated that despite the unveiling of the destroyer, considerable time is necessary for its operational deployment.
Lee noted that the development of warships typically spans several years, and additional time is needed for deployment even after construction is completed. He mentioned the possibility that North Korea may have received technological or financial assistance from Russia in the development of this vessel.
In addition, 38 North, a U.S.-based think tank that monitors North Korea, stated that further work appears to be required for the destroyer, referencing commercial satellite imagery from Friday that showed tugboats being used to maneuver the ship.

합동참모본부 대변인 이성준 대령은 북한의 5,000톤 규모인 최현 구축함이 금요일에 진수된 후 월요일과 화요일 첫 무기 시스템 실사격 테스트를 실시한 뒤 이같이 평가했다.
이 대령은 브리핑에서 "최현이 공개되었지만, 배치에는 상당한 시간이 필요할 것"이라며 "무기와 장비를 볼 때 (북한이) 러시아로부터 기술적 또는 재정적 도움을 받았을 가능성이 있다"고 말했다.
그는 군함 개발에는 일반적으로 수년이 걸리며, 선박이 건조된 이후에도 배치에 더욱 많은 시간이 필요하다고 강조했다.
"우리는 북한의 무기 개발 활동을 면밀히 모니터링하고 추적하고 있다."
북한을 감시하는 미국의 싱크탱크인 38 North는 이전에 상업 위성을 통해 금요일에 촬영된 이미지를 인용해 구축함에 대해 더 많은 작업이 필요한 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다. 해당 이미지는 선박 이동에 사용된 예인선이 보였다.
