<p>Negotiations to allow Korean tour players to compete in an LPGA event on home soil have collapsed, according to officials on Thursday. The BMW Ladies Championship, the sole U.S. LPGA stop held in Korea each fall, will not be co-sanctioned with the Korean circuit after the LPGA declined the Korean proposal to include at least 30 homegrown players in a field of 78.</p>
<p>The BMW Ladies Championship is scheduled for October 22-25 at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, about 330 kilometers south of Seoul. The KLPGA said it had met with the LPGA 16 times over eight months and insisted that a minimum of 30 KLPGA players be part of the field for co-sanctioning to occur, a condition the LPGA could not meet, offering instead up to 10 KLPGA players.</p>
<p>The KLPGA stated it was willing to concessions on other aspects of the tournament, including schedule, operations and broadcasting, but kept its position that 30 players were necessary for co-sanctioning. The two sides were unable to reach a compromise.</p>
<p>Historically, the BMW Ladies Championship has included 30 KLPGA players in 2019 and 2021, with the 2020 edition canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The KLPGA emphasized that the 30-player minimum reflects the improved quality and competitiveness of the domestic tour and said it would continue to advocate for its members' rights and development of Korean women's golf.</p>
<p>If KLPGA players participate in the BMW Ladies Championship, earnings from the U.S. event will not count toward their KLPGA totals, and the KLPGA plans to run its own tournament in the same week. The KLPGA also noted that LPGA events in Asia have featured larger numbers of domestic players in other markets, such as the Blue Bay LPGA in China and the Toto Japan Classic in Japan.</p>
<p>The LPGA indicated that offering a spot for up to 10 KLPGA players was a meaningful opportunity and said it remains engaged with the KLPGA on longer-term opportunities, expressing a commitment to delivering a world-class BMW Ladies Championship this October while continuing to work with the KLPGA on the event's future and the broader development of women's golf in Korea.</p>

BMW Ladies Championship는 10월 22일부터 25일까지 전라남도 해남의 파인비치 골프링크스에서 개최될 예정이다.
KLPGA는 지난 8개월 동안 LPGA 측과 16차례의 만남을 가졌으며 대회가 공동으로 주관되려면 최소 30명의 KLPGA 선수가 출전해야 한다고 강하게 주장했다.
반면 LPGA 측은 최대 10명의 KLPGA 선수만 출전할 수 있다고 응답했고 양측은 타협점에 이르지 못했다.
KLPGA는 대회 일정, 운영, 방송 등 다른 측면에서의 양보를 통해서라도 30명의 선수를 보내는 것을 허용하려고 했다고 밝혔다.
BMW Ladies Championship의 2019년과 2021년 대회는 30명의 KLPGA 선수들이 출전했으며, 2020년 대회는 코로나19로 취소되었다.
KLPGA는 성명에서 “KLPGA 투어의 질과 경쟁력이 향상된 점을 고려하면 LPGA 대회에 최소 30명의 선수 참가가 우리의 기본 기준이자 협상의 대상이 아니다”라며 “회원들의 권리와 이익을 대변하고 한국 여자 골프의 지속 발전을 도모하기 위해 계속 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
KLPGA 선수들이 BMW Ladies Championship에 참가하기로 결정하더라도 미국 투어 대회에서 얻은 수입은 KLPGA 총계에 포함되지 않으며, 같은 주에 자체 대회가 열릴 것이라고 KLPGA는 밝혔다.
KLPGA는 아시아에서 열리는 LPGA 대회들에 국내 선수 비율이 더 많았다고도 지적했다. 중국에서 열린 블루베이 LPGA는 108명 중 37명의 국내 선수, 11월에 열리는 Toto Japan Classic은 78명 중 35명의 일본 투어 선수를 각각 참가시켰다.
LPGA 측은 10명의 KLPGA 선수 참가를 “의미 있는 기회”로 느꼈다고 말했다.
“장기적으로 KLPGA와의 관계를 계속 유지하며 협력하겠다. 한국은 LPGA에게 매우 중요하며 한국 팬들은 우리의 투어와 세계적으로 여성 골프 발전에 큰 역할을 해왔다. 이번 10월 BMW Ladies Championship를 선수들, 파트너, 팬들을 위해 세계적 수준으로 개최하는 것이 당면 과제이며 한국 내 이 대회의 미래와 여성 골프에 대해 KLPGA와 건설적으로 협력하는 방식을 계속 모색하겠다”고 LPGA는 밝혔다.
