<p>“(정부는) 강한 방어 능력을 통해 국민과 영토를 수호하고 전쟁의 두려움이나 갈등의 필요가 없는 평화로운 한반도를 건설하겠다,”고 밝혔다.</p>
<p>“그렇다면 이는 이 나라를 지키기 위해 생과 청춘을 바친 용사들에게 줄 수 있는 가장 확실한 보상일 것”이라고 말했다.</p>
<p>대통령은 국내외에서 전쟁 중 희생한 이들의 헌신을 기억하며 정부가 “이 위대한 대한민국을 용사들이 세운 것처럼 흔들림 없이 지켜나갈 것”이라고 말했다. 남한의 공식 국호인 대한민국의 명칭도 언급했다.</p>
<p>“이 용사들을 기억하고 기리는 것은 나라와 지역사회에서 가장 중요한 의무이며 오늘의 자유와 번영, 평화를 누리는 후손들의 명확한 책임”이라고 말했다.</p>
<p>또한 남한이 국제 원조를 받는 나라에서 기여하는 나라로 성장했고 국제 사회에 되돌려줄 의무가 있다고 밝히며 해외 한국전 참전 용사들을 위한 초청 프로그램 확대를 약속했다.</p>
<p>기념식에서 이 대통령은 전쟁 중 공헌이 아직 인정받지 못한 세 명의 고인이거나 생존한 한국전 참전 용사들에게 국적 기념장을 수여했다.</p>
<p>3년간의 내전으로 수십만 명의 한국인과 해외 용사들이 사망했고 한반도는 남한의 자본주의 체제와 북한의 사회주의 체제로 분단됐다.</p>
<p>전쟁은 1953년 정전 협정 체결로 종결됐으나 현재까지 거의 80년 가까이 사실상 전쟁 상태로 남아 있다.</p>
<p>전쟁 발발 이후 국제 연합군으로서 16개 외국이 남한 측 전투 부대에 파병했다.</p>
