<p>Yacksel Rios has quickly become a pivotal bullpen asset for the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization, with manager Youm Kyoung-youb declaring him the team’s top reliever in the league after a recent stretch of dominance.</p>
<p>In his first two weeks with the Twins, Rios has largely dominated high-leverage situations, recording four holds in his first five outings and earning his first KBO save in a 2-0 win over the Samsung Lions. Youm had praised him as the No. 1 reliever in the league prior to that save.</p>
<p>Rios downplayed individual recognition, saying his goal is to blend into the bullpen and contribute to the team, noting that there are nine innings to cover and that he is just one component of a collective effort.</p>
<p>Since joining, Rios has posted solid numbers, beginning with a scoreless debut and later delivering back-to-back shutout outings for holds. He endured a difficult first appearance against the Kia Tigers, where he allowed a two-run homer, but rebounded with two shutout innings against the Doosan Bears and other strong relief performances against the Lions.</p>
<p>In a recent save situation, with closer Son Ju-young unavailable after a heavy workload, Rios entered in the top of the ninth and navigated through the heart of the Lions order, striking out the first two batters and yielding a single but preserving the lead. He highlighted his focus on not letting prior encounters influence his approach and emphasized ongoing adjustments to facing KBO hitters.</p>
<p>Rios relies primarily on a blazing four-seam fastball, averaging 157.5 kph and reaching a recorded 161.7 kph on his first-pitch fastball, the fastest in KBO data history. He rarely uses his curveball, which constitutes less than 3 percent of his pitches, and acknowledged the need to develop a plan as hitters adjust to his fastball. Youm has stated confidence in Rios, who has pitched in various relief roles, and the pitcher indicated readiness to contribute three days in a row if needed to help the team win.</p>

지난 주의 한 차례 실수 외에는 팀의 최고인으로 꼽히는 팀을 상대로 중요한 이닝을 책임지며 사실상 무실점을 이어온 리오스는 첫 다섯 경기에서 4개의 홀드를 기록한 뒤, 수요일 저녁 삼성 라이온스전에서 KBO 구원 투수 첫 세이브를 기록했다. 이는 유 감독이 리오스를 KBO의 “1번 구원투수”라고 선언한 직후였다.
리오스는 감독의 찬사에 감사해했다. 그러나 이 빠른 볼을 던지는 우완 투수는 다른 선수들과 어울려 팀에 녹아들고 싶어 한다.
그는 “감독님이 저에게 그런 믿음을 보여줘서 기쁘다. 벤프에서 또 다른 한 명이 되고 싶다. 우리에게는 9이닝이 남아 있다. 우리는 모두 잘하고 있고, 저는 특별한 존재가 아니다. 저는 팀의 일원일 뿐이다.”라고 밝혔다.
하지만 트윈스에게 리오스는 꽤 특별했다. 수요일 승리로 팀은 47승 26무로 올라섰다. 그는 KBO 데뷔전인 6월 10일 무실점 이닝으로 첫 홀트를 기록했고, 삼일 뒤에는 또 한 차례 무실점 이닝을 던져 홀트를 추가했다.
리오스의 “KBO에 온 환영의 경기”는 Kia 타이거스로부터 6월 17일에 나섰고, 한 이닝도 채우지 못하고 2실점 홈런을 허용하며 첫 패를 기록했다.
그러나 이틀 뒤 두 점의 무실점 이닝을 던지며 세 번째 홀트를 기록했고, 화요일 라이온스전에서도 한 이닝에 삼진 두 개를 잡아냈다.
closer 선즈 유영이 화요일 밤 최다 구론 37구를 던진 뒤 수요일에는 사용할 수 없는 상황에서 리오스가 9회 상단에 마운드에 올랐다. 트윈스가 두 점 앞선 상황이었다.
리오스는 첫 두 타자를 삼진으로 잡았고, 이전에 리오스가 대타로 만난 루엔 디아스의 3루타를 허용해도, 이 득점은 리오스가 대신 던진 김진성에게 귀속됐다.
그는 “전에 디아스와의 대치를 떠올리게 만들었느냐고 묻자 미소를 지으며 ‘그렇지 않으려면 거짓말일 것’이라고 말했다.”고 전했다.
리오스는 최강 타자 임상희 데이와의 충돌에서 최강자 김영웅을 커브볼로 삼진으로 잡아내며 위기를 벗겼다. 다만 리오스의 커브볼은 3% 미만의 비중으로 구사되었다. 그의 주무기는 4-seam 패스트볼이다.
그의 패스트볼 평균 속도는 시속 약 157.5km로, 최다 이닝 요건 없이도 KBO에서 가장 빠른 투구를 하는 투수로 평가된다. 그리고 김과의 첫구는 시속 161.7km로 KBO가 Trackman 데이터를 수집하기 시작한 이래 기록상 가장 빠른 구속이다.
리오스는 “나는 최대한 빨리 던지려 하는 것이 아니다. 타자를 아웃시키려 한다.”고 말하며 “KBO에 대해 아직 배우고 있다. 빠르게 적응하는 좋은 타자가 많아 내 패스트볼에 조정이 빠르게 이뤄진다. 그러나 초구에서 많이 얻어맞아 계획을 더 잘 세워야 한다.”고 덧붙였다.
유 감독은 리오스에 대한 신뢰를 바탕으로 이 투수를 6, 7, 8, 9 이닝 모든 구간에서 등판시키고 있다. 리오스가 특정 역할이나 이닝을 선호하는지에 대해 묻자, 그는 간결하게 말했다. “나의 역할은 팀을 돕는 것.”
리오스는 이번 주까지 연속 출전은 아니었지만, 앞으로도 3일 간격으로 출전해도 준비가 되어 있다고 밝혔다. “필요하다면 그렇게 할 것이다. 팀이 이길 수 있다면, 그리고 몸이 괜찮다면 그렇게 하겠다.”
