<p>A group of international artists living and studying in Korea have unveiled "Sweet Bread," a group art exhibit at KOTE in Seoul's Insa-dong district. The show draws on their experiences as foreigners navigating life in Korea, offering a visual reflection of everyday encounters and shifts in perception and behavior.</p>
<p>The collaboration brings together four German art students and a Russian photographer. Their work presents a collective outsider perspective that reinterprets ordinary visual and digital stimuli as seductive, soothing, and sometimes excessive. Postcard series, generative design, and photography explore urban life beyond well-known landmarks, focusing on everyday scenes like subway stations and street signs.</p>
<p>Laila Kamil, a participant from the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, described forming the group through university connections and local gallery support after initial exhibition applications yielded limited responses. Her contribution includes a series of postcards generated by a software program called Seoul Postcard Compositor, which uses photographs of Seoul to create unique layouts each time it runs.</p>
<p>Kamil noted a shift from awareness of color and bustle in daily Seoul to a focus on ordinary urban landscapes, arguing that such scenes are meaningful and worthy of preservation. Each printed postcard is unique and designed not to repeat.</p>
<p>Another work, Niklas Kleemann's "Argus Disc," combines time, location, and orientation data to track the sun in real time using self-programmed software and microcontrollers. The installation emphasizes humanity's relationship with the sun, with eye-like projections following the sun across the sky.</p>
<p>The exhibition also documents the emotional experience of adapting to a new country. Ava Korte and Amalia Ekshenger described their observations of locals’ curiosity and friendliness, especially among older Koreans, which transformed initial feelings of alienation into a sense of welcome and cultural exchange. Their collaborative photography project includes encounters with older locals who sometimes join shoots and become part of the artwork.</p>
<p>The show features multiple works, including Ava Korte's ten photographs and a sculpture titled "Bamti," which explores the tension between outward charm and underlying pressures of conformity in Korean culture. Anina Göpel's installation titled "Collapsing" is also part of the exhibit, which runs through June 11 at KOTE.</p>

<p>라이라 카밀은 독일 라이프치히 예술대학에서 온 엔트로프 출신으로, 청양대와의 교환 프로그램으로 한국에 왔다. 그룹은 대학 학업을 통해 우정이 형성되었고, 초기에 여러 공모전에 지원했으나 반응이 미흡했다. 지역 갤러리의 지원과 인맥을 통해 비전을 실현하게 되었다고 말했다.</p>
<p>이번 전시를 위해 그녀는 도시의 일상 풍경에서 영감을 받은 엽서 시리즈를 만들었다. Seoul Postcard Compositor는 엽서 디자인을 생성하는 소프트웨어다. 알고리즘은 서울에서 촬영한 사진에 도시 곳곳의 간판과 스티커를 결합해 프로그램이 실행될 때마다 독특한 엽서 레이아웃을 만든다.</p>
<p>“엽서를 정말 좋아한다. 요즘은 항상 연락이 닿아 있는 느낌이지만, 엽서를 보내는 것이 더 의미 있다고 생각한다. 한국에서 찾을 수 있는 엽서가 많지 않아 직접 만들기로 했다.”고 말했다. 또한 “여기서 살면서 특히 지하철역이 매우 다채롭다고 느꼈다”고 덧붙였다.</p>
<p>그녀의 생성 엽서에는 유명한 관광지 대신 지하철역, 도로 표지판, 일반적인 도시 풍경이 실렸다. 카밀은 한국의 엽서가 주로 궁궐과 역사적 명소에 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있고, 도시의 독특한 매력을 형성하는 일상 풍경은 자주 간과된다고 지적했다. 이러한 평범한 풍경은 그녀에게 특히 의미 있고 보존할 가치가 있다고 느껴졌다. 각 인쇄된 엽서는 고유하며 동일한 디자인이 두 번 인쇄되지 않는다.</p>

<p>니클라스 클레이만은 독일 중부의 하늘이 넓다고 느낀다고 말했다. 서울에서의 하루를 보내며 많은 시간을 실내에 있거나 고층 빌딩에 둘러싸여 지내다 보면 해를 놓치기 쉽다. 그의 작품 “Argus Disc”는 그 느낌에서 구상되었다. 이 설치는 시간·위치·방향에 기반한 수학적 계산을 통해 해의 위치를 지속적으로 추적하는 기술 주도형 디스크다. 자가 프로그램 소프트웨어가 탑재된 이 디스크는 여섯 대의 마이크로컨트롤러로 구성된 생성적 설치로, 각각의 눈이 실제 햇빛의 위치를 실시간으로 따라가도록 프로그래밍되어 있다. 동체의 눈동자는 지평선 위와 아래의 천구를 가로지른 햇빛을 따라 움직인다.</p>
<p>전시는 새로운 나라에 적응하는 정서적 경험도 탐구한다. 아우크스부르크 대학교의 Ava Korte는 한국에 도착했을 때의 기대와 불확실성, 특히 현지인들이 자신의 외모를 어떻게 볼지에 대한 의문을 언급했다. 그녀는 낯선 이들의 호기심 어린 시선을 자주 접했고 그것들을 해석하기 어려웠다고 한다. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 상황은 크게 달라졌다. 판단 대신 호기심과 친절이 더 많았고, 특히 연세가 많은 한국인들 사이에서 그렇다고 말했다. 처음에는 낯설다고 느꼈던 감정이 점차 구분되며, 다르게 보이지만 친근하게 환영받는 느낌으로 바뀌었다고 설명했다.</p>

<p>이러한 깨달음은 그녀와 러시아 출신의 건축가이자 사진가이자 아트 디렉터인 Amalia Ekshenger가 함께 만든 협업 사진 프로젝트의 중요한 요소가 되었다. 서울 곳곳의 촬영 중 노년층 현지인들은 작업에 진정한 관심을 보였고, 일부는 자발적으로 사진 세션에 합류하여 소품과 함께 작품의 일부가 되기도 했다. 초기에는 계획적으로 진행되던 예술 프로젝트가 예기치 않은 문화 교류의 순간으로 발전했다.</p>
<p>Ekshenger의 작업은 한국 문화에 대한 강렬한 정밀도로 구현되었다. 그녀는 10장의 사진과 “Bamti”(한국어로 못생김 또는 촌스러움을 뜻하는)라는 제목의 조각 작품이 포함된 전시를 소개했다. 이 단어는 달콤함과 왜곡 사이, 압도적인 귀여움과 잠재적 독성을 균형 잡고 있다.</p>
<p>“저에게 이는 표면적으로 부드럽고 장난스러우며 미적 위안처럼 보이는 문화가 내면적으로는 순응, 완벽, 정서적 억압의 invisible한 압력을 품고 있는 모습을 반영합니다.”라고 말했다.</p>
<p>Ekshenger에게 이러한 유사한 경험은 한국으로 이주를 선택한 이유 중 하나를 반영한다. 그녀는 이전 방문에서 느낀 따뜻함과 개방성에 깊은 인상을 받았다고 회상했다.</p>
<p>“한국 사람들과의 교류에서 가장 감탄하는 점은 그들이 무언가에 대한 순수한 호기심을 유지한다는 것인데, 나의 고향이나 이전에 살았던 곳에서는 그런 모습을 보지 못했다.”</p>
<p>그녀의 시각에서 한국에서 만난 많은 사람들은 낯선 사람과의 교류에 기꺼이 참여하고 아이디어를 교환하며 창의적 대화를 나눴다고 한다. 특히 “어린 아이의 호기심”이 자발적 상호작용과 타인에 대한 진정한 관심을 촉진한다고 존경했다고 말했다.</p>
<p>“자주 현지인들이 나를 어떻게 바라보는지에 대해 과민해지곤 했다. 너무 두드러지거나 모욕감을 주지 않으려 하다 보니 자연스럽게 섞이고 싶은 마음이 컸는데, 이런 긍정적 관심을 받으면 놀랍습니다.”라고 덧붙였다.</p>
