<p class="editor-p">A New York-based Korean American visual artist, Sungmo Cho, is returning to Korea after 14 years to display his works across several galleries nationwide.</p>
<p class="editor-p">Since moving to New York in 1992, Cho has built a career shaped by migration, memory and a connection to nature, with his work reflecting ongoing reflections on humanity.</p>
<p class="editor-p">His artistic identity integrates experiences from both Korea and the United States, supported by more than 30 solo shows in New York, Korea and Japan, along with over 150 group exhibitions in four countries.</p>
<p class="editor-p">Cho has described the challenges of living as an artist and the broader cultural adjustments involved for immigrants, noting how he has learned to navigate unfamiliar environments while preserving his Korean identity.</p>

<p class="editor-p">Cho notes that his early Korea-focused work examined rapid industrialization and urban change, themes he felt eroded human connection as neighborhoods transformed and the world appeared colder.</p>
<p class="editor-p">Relocation to the United States brought exposure to expansive landscapes and nature, particularly in upstate New York, prompting a shift in focus from civilization imagery to the natural world.</p>
<p class="editor-p">His ongoing LOVE Road series uses roads as a metaphor for civilization—initially signaling division between development and nature, then evolving into a journey symbolizing connection and coexistence.</p>

<p class="editor-p">In 2009, he established Sarang Mountain, a private nonprofit art site in Monroe, New York, serving as a retreat for artistic work amid natural surroundings.</p>
<p class="editor-p">Cho views his work as conveying an urgent message about contemporary life, expressing concern that advancing technology and AI may erode human emotion and the sense of love unless it is actively preserved.</p>
<p class="editor-p">He hopes viewers encounter his art as a reminder of love, peace and coexistence, suggesting that art can inspire breathing space and positive change in times of disruption.</p>

<p class="editor-p">The LOVE Road exhibition is scheduled at Topohaus Total Art Gallery in Insa-dong from May 13 to 19, followed by Buyeo Cultural Center from May 29 to June 4. An event with an artist talk is planned in Chungju on May 23.</p>

<p>1992년 뉴욕으로 이주한 그는 적응과 변신의 여정을 걸어왔으며, 그의 창작은 이주, 기억, 자연에 대한 깊은 연결 고리에 의해 형성된 인간성에 대한 평생의 성찰을 반영한다.</p>
<p>한국과 미국 문화 간의 대조는 조의 예술 정체성 형성에 큰 영향을 주었으며, 그는 뉴욕, 한국, 일본에서 30여 회의 개인전은 물론 네 나라에서 150여 회의 그룹전에 걸쳐 광범위하게 전시해 왔다.</p>
<p>“다수의 이민자들처럼 예술가로 산다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 일도 해야 하고 문화와 언어, 심지어 일상생활까지 everything가 낯설게 느껴진다.”고 그는 더 코리아 타임스에 말했다.</p>

<p>그는 초기 시절을 어려움으로 기억한다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 한국 사회의 집단주의와 미국의 개인주의 차이를 이해하고 수용하는 법을 배우며 지금의 이중 정체성을 자연스럽게 가지게 되었다고 말했다.</p>
<p>“미국에서는 사람들이 당신이 무엇을 입거나 무엇을 하는지 신경 쓰지 않는다. 그들의 공간을 존중한다.”고 전했다.</p>
<p>이 같은 대조는 그에겐 갈등이 아니라 시각의 확장이었다며, 서로 다른 문화 환경을 흡수하고 존중하는 데에 자연스럽게 적응할 수 있지만 한국적 정체성은 유지한다고 설명했다.</p>
<p> emigr하기 전 한국에서의 작업은 주로 문명 주제에 초점을 맞췄다. 급속한 산업화 시대를 살아가며 도시 환경이 얼마나 빨리 변하는지, 그 변화가 결국 인간과의 연결을 잃게 하는 면이 있었는지 관찰했다.</p>
<p>“모든 것이 너무 빨리 변했고, 이웃이 파괴되었으며, 무언가 인간적으로 잃어버리는 느낌이 들었다. 세상이 점점 더 차갑게 느껴졌다.”고 말했다.</p>
<p>일찍이 그의 그림은 이러한 우려를 반영해 발전과 인간 관계의 소실 사이의 긴장을 탐구하며 도로, 건물, 산업 이미지는 진보와 파괴의 양면으로 상징화되었다. 그러나 미국으로의 이주는 그의 시선을 바꿔 놓았고, 거대한 풍경과 녹지, 느린 삶의 리듬을 접한 그는 특히 뉴욕 북부의 자연을 전혀 다른 방식으로 경험했다.</p>
<p>“그 당시 한국에서 경험한 적이 없었던 많은 나무와 푸른 잔디를 보았다.”고 말했다.</p>
<p>자연 속으로의 몰입은 그의 예술적 초점을 바꾸었다. 예전에 문명을 그리던 그는 이제 자연 세계를 그림으로 표현하기 시작했다.</p>

<p>조의 많은 작품에서 도로는 문명이 만들어낸 산물로, 기원전 기록의 시작부터 지금까지의 흐름을 상징한다. 그는 “도로는 인간의 편의를 위해, 시간을 절약하기 위해 만들어진 것이지만, 그 과정에서 자연이 파괴된 것이 분명하다. 그것이 도로의 두 가지 면이다.”고 예술가의 진술에서 적었다.</p>
<p>이 성찰은 LOVE Road 시리즈로 이어진 가장 중요한 작업 중 하나로 자리 잡았다. 초기에는 도로가 자연과 인간 개발, 편의와 파괴를 구분하는 상징이었지만 시간이 흐르며 도로는 하나의 상징적인 여정으로 발전했다.</p>

<p>2009년 북부 지역으로 이주해 뉴욕 몬로에 사랑Mountain이라는 비영리 예술 공간을 설립했고, 예술적 작업을 위한 자연적이고 창의적인 은둔처로 활용해 왔다.</p>
<p>“어렸을 때 자연은 신비롭고 아름답다고 느꼈다. 산속에서 그 느낌을 다시 느꼈다.”고 말했다.</p>
<p>오늘날 조는 자신의 작업이 시급한 메시지를 담고 있다고 본다. 기술, 인공지능(AI)의 발전과 점점 커지는 단절 속에서 인간이 감정의 핵심을 잃고 있다며 우려를 표한다.</p>
<p>“우리는 AI와 기계와 함께 살고 있지만, 인간의 마음과 사랑의 감각을 잃으면 결국 인간성 자체를 잃을 위험이 있다.”고 말했다.</p>
<p>그는 예술을 통해 시청자들이 진정으로 중요한 것이 무엇인지 상기시키고자 한다. 사랑, 평화, 공존은 추상적 이상이 아니라 적극적으로 보존해야 하는 본질적 가치이며, 사람들이 그의 작품을 보며 조용하지만 강력한 상기를 얻길 바란다고 말했다. “누군가가 어려움을 겪고 있다면 내 그림을 보고 사랑을 기억하고, 숨을 한 번 쉬면 무언가 바뀔지도 모른다. 인간이 가장 필요로 하는 것은 사랑이다.”</p>
