Korea is deepening its diplomatic engagement with African nations by convening a high-level meeting with ambassadors to prepare for a major ministerial gathering scheduled for early June.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described a trilateral meeting with the African Group of Ambassadors in Korea and the Korea-Africa Foundation to review plans for the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on June 1 and a related business forum on June 2.
Approximately 20 African diplomatic missions participated in the discussions.
Officials said strengthening strategic ties with African nations is increasingly important amid shifting global dynamics, with the ministerial meeting expected to build on momentum from the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit and a senior officials’ meeting held last year.
Ambassadors from Africa expressed willingness to cooperate actively to ensure substantive outcomes from the talks, while noting Africa Day on May 25 as an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding through joint celebrations with the Korea-Africa Foundation.
A Foundation president emphasized broad cooperation beyond government exchanges, urging closer collaboration in economic and cultural sectors and continued coordination with African diplomats.
The ministry said the upcoming meetings aim to expand practical cooperation with Africa, highlighting its growing strategic importance as a source of minerals and as a potential alternative to global supply chains amid economic uncertainty.
