The head of Seongdong district, Chong Won-o, resigned from his post Wednesday to pursue the Seoul mayoral race in the upcoming local elections on June 3.
Chong, who has announced his bid for Seoul mayor, held a retirement ceremony at the Seongdong District Office and plans to register as a preliminary candidate the following day.
He will face four other contenders in the Democratic Party’s primary for Seoul mayor: three-term lawmakers Rep. Park Ju-min and Jeon Hyeon-hui, two-term lawmaker Kim Young-bae, and Kim Hyoung-nam, former secretary general of the Center for Military Human Rights Korea.
The election law requires public officials to step down by March 5, or 90 days before the vote, to run for office in the upcoming election.
Chong, who previously served 12 years as district chief, drew attention late last year when a social media post by the president highlighted a survey showing 93 percent of respondents were satisfied with Chong’s performance, a move seen as presidential support.
