Korean banks operating in the Middle East are taking steps to ensure staff safety as the regional fallout from the U.S.-Israel war against Iran increases, according to industry officials.
No Korean financial institutions reported direct damage in the region, but several have relocated staff from conflict zones and shifted to remote operations.
Shinhan Bank’s Dubai branch currently employs 11 people, including three Korean staff and eight locals, all working remotely, with families already returning to Korea. The branch is closed to in-person service and conducting non-face-to-face operations while staff safety is monitored in real time.
Concerns grew after buildings in the Dubai International Financial Centre were struck by an Iranian airstrike near the Shinhan branch site. Woori Bank, whose Dubai branch is close to the blast location, has moved Korean staff to its Mumbai office and shifted local staff to remote work.
Woori’s Bahrain-based workers have relocated to its European subsidiary in Frankfurt, continuing operations there. Hana Bank operates in the Middle East through branches in Bahrain and the UAE, relocating Bahrain-based employees to Saudi Arabia and planning further moves to ensure service continuity for Korean firms in the region; UAE branches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai maintain operations with essential staff onsite and others working remotely.
Hana Bank indicated possible further relocations of remaining Middle East staff to its Mumbai or London offices if tensions escalate, and noted that families of employees are returning to Korea under an evacuation plan by the end of the week.
한국의 은행들이 중동에서의 운영을 지속하기 위해 직원 안전 확보에 주력하고 있다고 업계 관계자들이 월요일 밝혔다. 미국-이스라엘의 이란에 대한 전쟁이 지역 전역으로 확산되는 가운데다. 현재까지 이 지역에서 직접적인 피해를 보고한 한국 금융기관은 없지만, 은행들은 분쟁 지역의 직원들을 이동시키고 원격 근무로 전환하는 등 대응에 나섰다. 신한은행 두바이 지점에는 현재 11명의 직원이 근무 중이며, 이 중 한국인 직원 3명과 현지 채용 직원 8명이 모두 원격으로 근무하고 있다. 한국인 직원의 가족은 이미 한국으로 귀국한 상태다. 은행 측은 “지점은 현재 폐쇄 상태이며 비대면 업무만 수행하고 있다. 직원들의 부상이나 피해는 없었으며 실시간 소통 채널을 통해 안전을 확인하고 있다”고 밝혔다. Dubai International Financial Centre의 건물에 지난주 이란의 공습이 가해지면서 해당 지점이 위치한 건물에서 약 500미터 떨어진 거리에 해당하는 상황이 악화된 점도 우려를 키웠다. 두바이 지점이 있는 우리은행 역시 위험 상황을 예의주시하며 precautionary(사전조치) 조치를 취했다. 두바이 지점의 한국인 직원들은 벤치마크로 인근 인도 뭄바이 사무소로 이동해 업무를 계속하고 있으며, 현지 채용 직원은 원격 근무로 전환했다. 바레인 지점 직원들은 프랑크푸르트의 유럽 자회사로 옮겨 현지에서 업무를 지속하고 있다. “위기 초기에부터 직원 안전 확보에 각별히 신경 써 왔다”고 우리은행 측은 밝혔다. 하나은행은 중동에 베이루트와 두바이 등 두 곳의 지점을 운영하며, 바레인 지점의 직원은 보안 상황 악화로 인접한 사우디아라비아로 이동했고, 조만간 다른 나라의 백업 사무소로 옮겨 중동의 한국 기업들을 위한 서비스를 계속할 계획이다. UAE의 아부다비와 두바이 지점은 운영을 계속하고 있으며, 필수 인력은 사무실에서 근무하고 나머지 인력은 원격 근무를 통해 양 지점 모두 정상 운영을 유지하고 있다. 긴장이 더욱 고조될 경우 하나은행은 중동의 남은 한국인 직원들을 인도 뭄바이 지점이나 유럽- 중동 본부가 위치한 런던으로 옮길 계획이다. “중동 지점 직원 가족들은 사전 구성된 대피 계획에 따라 한국으로 귀국하고 있으며 이번 주 말까지 모두 귀국하는 것이 예상된다”고 하나은행 관계자는 말했다.
