Prosecutors on Thursday requested a life sentence for a mother suspected of abusing and causing the death of her four-month-old son last year.
The defendant, in her 30s, is accused of repeatedly beating the infant before placing him in a bathtub at their home in Yeosu, where he died from multiple fractures and internal injuries on Oct. 22.
A 10-year term was sought for the husband on charges of neglecting the abuse and threatening a witness. Both spouses were indicted on counts of physical detention.
Prosecutors argued that the punishment should be severe due to the lack of remorse and the severity of the abuse, noting that even an adult would have struggled to endure it.
An investigation indicated the mother engaged in abusive acts against her son on 19 occasions since Aug. 24.
The case sparked nationwide outrage after footage of the abuse aired, prompting lawmakers to petition for the maximum possible punishment for the mother.
The sentencing trial for the couple is scheduled for April 23.
