Korea has won at least one speed skating gold medal at three consecutive Winter Olympics starting in 2010, with the streak ending at Beijing in 2022. The country collected two silver and two bronze medals there, the third-highest total behind the Netherlands (12) and Canada and Japan (five apiece).
Kim Min-sun, 26, will compete in her third Olympics in the women's 500 meters. Seen as the successor to Lee Sang-hwa, who won gold in 2010 and 2014 and silver in 2018, Kim has had World Cup success but her Olympic results have lagged, finishing 16th in 2018 and seventh in 2022.
Kim broke out in the 2022-2023 ISU World Cup season, winning the 500m overall title by taking five consecutive golds. She later adjusted her training to peak in February for the Olympics, rather than in the early months of the season, a change that affected short-term World Cup results but aligned with her 2026 Olympic target.
In the 2024-2025 season, Kim started with a bronze, then failed to reach the podium in her next six 500m races. After the calendar turned to 2025, she earned a World Cup silver in February and a world championship bronze in March.
Lee Na-hyun, 20, is viewed as Korea's rising star in the 500m. She finished just behind Kim to win silver in the 500m at the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, and defeated Kim to win the 100m title, which is not an Olympic event. Lee set the junior world record in the 500m with 37.43 seconds in January 2024 and has topped that mark three times this season at the senior level, also finishing ahead of Kim in World Cup standings.
In the field, Femke Kok of the Netherlands, who broke Lee Sang-hwa's 12-year world record with 36.09 seconds in November, has gone 7-for-7 in World Cup races and is a leading gold-medal favorite in Milan. Erin Jackson, the United States' defending 500m champion, will seek to become the first back-to-back winner since Lee Sang-hwa.
The speed skating program is set to begin Saturday, with all races run at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium.

이나현(만 20세)은 500m의 차세대 유망주로 주목받고 있다. 2025년 하얼빈에서 열린 아시안 겨울 스포츠 대회에서 김민선의 뒤를 이어 500m 은메달을 차지했고, 같은 대회에서 열린 100m에서도 김민선을 제치고 우승해 해당 거리의 올림픽 종목은 아니다. 2024년 1월 500m 주니어 세계 기록 37.43초를 세운 이후 이번 시즌에도 그 기록을 세 차례 갱신했고, 이는 성인 부문에서의 첫 기록으로 평가된다. 또한 월드컵 순위에서도 이나현이 김민선보다 앞서고 있다.
