The Mission:K is a musical that premiered Friday at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul, presenting the stories of foreign Christian missionaries who helped establish education and medicine on the Korean Peninsula in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The production casts four male K-pop idols as four historical figures: Horace N. Allen (1858-1932), who established the first Western medical clinic in the Joseon Dynasty; Horace G. Underwood (1859-1916), who founded the Joseon Christian College, later Yonsei University; Oliver R. Avison (1860-1956), a Canadian doctor who led quarantine efforts during a cholera outbreak and contributed to opening Severance Hospital and Severance Medical College; and Louis H. Severance (1838-1913), a U.S. oil businessman and philanthropist who funded the hospital’s construction. All except Severance arrived in Korea as missionaries in the 1880s and 1890s and helped lay the foundations of Joseon’s medical and educational systems.
Rather than traveling back in time, the four idols appear as present-day members of a fictional K-pop group called “The Mission.” The narrative unfolds as a talk show that looks back 140 years to recall what happened, what they did and why they did it.
Executive producer and music director Jang So-young explained that while focusing on a single figure could yield a traditional musical, combining all four and their commonalities would risk a heavy, plot-driven piece. The talk show format was chosen to be entertaining while informative.
The Mission:K delivered an engaging 110-minute performance of song and dance suitable for all ages, conveying information about the four figures, their contributions and hardships through music and movement. Lighting effects projected varied backdrops, from traditional royal palaces to abstract red light pillars.
Casting real K-pop idols provided a clear advantage; their singing, dancing and spontaneity helped the show feel like a high-energy concert, with some audience members attending specifically to see their favorite performers. Backup dancers contributed additional dynamic choreography, including breakdancing.
The production was part of events marking the 140th anniversary of Protestantism in Korea and benefited from sponsorship by a major university health system and related institutions.
The show ran for three days, from Friday to Sunday, with participants expressing hope for future performances in Korea and overseas to broaden access to the story and its historical figures.

이들은 실제로 과거로의 시간여행이 아니라 가상의 K팝 그룹 “The Mission”의 현 멤버로 등장해 140년 전의 일을 되돌아보며 무엇을 했고 왜 했는지를 토크쇼 형식으로 풀어냈다.
제작 총괄 겸 음악감독인 장소영은 기자간담회에서 “한 인물의 이야기에 집중하면 뮤지컬을 더 깊게 만들 수 있었겠지만, 네 인물의 공통점과 각자의 업적을 엮다 보니 무게감 있는 다큐멘터리나 플롯 중심의 뮤지컬보다 재미와 정보를 함께 전달하는 토크쇼 형식이 더 어울렸다”고 밝혔다.
The Mission:K는 110분 분량의 노래와 춤으로 모든 연령대에 어울리는 공연이었다. 네 인물의 기여와 개인적 고난을 음악과 무용으로 전달했고, 전통 궁전 배경에서부터 추상적 붉은 빛 기둴까지 다양한 조명이 배경을 표현했다.
실제 아이돌의 참여는 노래와 댄스, 즉흥적 감각이 공연의 몰입도를 높였고, 때로는 K팝 콘서트를 연상시키기도 했다. 관객 중에는 아이돌을 보기 위해 표를 구입한 팬이 있었고, 이름을 밝히지 않은 20대 여성을 포함해 중국에서 재윤의 공연을 보러 온 관람객도 있었다. 백업 댄서들도 다채로운 동작을 선보이며 음악과 함께 공연에 활력을 더했다.
이 공연은 한국 개신교 선교 140주년 기념 행사의 일환으로 기획됐으며, 일부 후원 기관이 참여했다.
공연은 금요일에 시작해 주말인 일요일까지 3일간 상연됐으며, 참여한 연세대 교수 박성근은 향후 국내외 공연 확장을 기대한다고 밝혔다.
이 작품은 역사적 인물의 업적을 현대의 음악과 무용으로 생생하게 전달하며, 역사 교육적 가치와 대중문화의 융합 가능성을 보여주는 사례로 평가된다.
