Korean athletes attended the opening ceremony of the Jincheon National Training Center for the new year in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, on Wednesday.
The main national athletic training center officially commenced operations for 2026, coinciding with a series of upcoming international competitions, including the Winter Olympics.
The Winter Games, co-hosted by the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, are set to begin on February 6. Other significant events on the busy sporting calendar include the World Baseball Classic, the FIFA World Cup, and the Asian Games.
During the ceremony, Ryu Seung-min, president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC), announced that 2026 will be "the year of K-sports." He emphasized the organization's commitment to supporting athletes and enhancing training environments.
"We at the KSOC will offer our full support for our athletes and do our best to create optimal training environments," Ryu stated. He noted that the annual budget has been increased and new equipment acquired to bolster medical support for national team athletes, indicating that the training center will be a place for both athletic skill development and personal growth.
Chae Hwi-young, the minister of culture, sports, and tourism, highlighted that international sporting events not only provide competitive opportunities but also allow participating nations to showcase their capabilities.
In his address to the athletes, Chae remarked, "Your display of sportsmanship and respect will be a source of national pride and promote our national prestige." He expressed hope that the year would be one where athletes' dreams are realized and assured continued governmental support for their focus on training.

북청주 진천의 진천 국가훈련센터에서 수백 명의 선수와 관계자들이 참석한 가운데, 대한체육회(KSOC) 류승민 회장은 2026년을 "K-스포츠의 해"로 선언했다.
개막식에서 류 회장은 "KSOC는 선수들에게 전폭적인 지원을 아끼지 않을 것이며 최적의 훈련 환경을 조성하기 위해 최선을 다할 것"이라며 "연간 예산을 늘리고 국가대표 선수들을 위한 의료 지원을 강화하기 위해 신규 장비를 확보했다. 훈련센터는 단순히 운동 기술을 연마하는 장소가 아니라, 선수들이 건강하고 지속 가능한 환경에서 개인적으로 성장할 수 있는 공간이 될 것"이라고 말했다.
문화체육관광부 최희용 장관은 국제 스포츠 이벤트가 단순한 운동 경쟁을 넘어 참가국들이 자국의 위상을 보여줄 수 있는 플랫폼이 된다고 강조했다.
최 장관은 참석한 선수들에게 "여러분의 스포츠맨십과 존중의 자세가 국가의 자부심의 원천이 되며, 우리의 국격을 높이는 데 기여할 것"이라고 말했다.
"여러분의 꿈이 모두 이루어지는 한 해가 되기를 희망한다"며 "부처는 여러분이 유념해야 할 과제에 집중할 수 있도록 계속 지원할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
