Violinist Lim Hyun-jae won first prize at the 2026 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition (EOIVC) held in Florida on Sunday local time, marking a major milestone in her comeback after a yearslong hiatus following a car accident.
Lim, 28, claimed the top honor with a performance of Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto in D minor with the Lynn University Philharmonia Orchestra, according to the competition's website. Video footage posted by the organizers shows Lim performing in a wheelchair.
As winner, she received $30,000 in prize money, plus an additional $2,000 in special awards. She will also be offered performance opportunities over the next three years on international stages, including in New York, Boston and Italy.
Lim moved to the United States at age seven and later graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, rising as a promising figure in the international classical music scene.
Her career was interrupted in May 2020 when she was involved in a traffic accident in Korea, forcing her to pause violin playing for more than four years. Following six surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation, Lim resumed performances in June 2024, with momentum increasing after she won first prize at the 20th Seoul International Music Competition in December of that year.
Founded in 2017 by American violinist Elmar Oliveira, the EOIVC aims to support the career development of young violinists. It is held every three years and is open to players aged 18 to 30.
This year's competition ran for two weeks beginning Jan. 4 and drew about 90 participants from 20 countries, organizers said.

여섯 차례의 수술과 긴 재활 과정 끝에 2024년 6월 재개했고, 12월에는 제20회 서울국제음악콩쿠르에서 1위를 차지하며 복귀에 속도가 붙었다.
대회를 창립한 미국 바이올리니스트 엘마르 올리베이라가 2017년에 설립한 EOIVC는 젊은 음악가들의 경력 성장을 지원하는 것을 목표로 한다.
대회는 매 3년마다 열리며 18세에서 30세 사이의 바이올리니스트에게 개방된다.
올해 대회는 1월 4일에 시작해 2주간 진행되었고, 20개국에서 약 90명의 참가자가 참가했다고 주최 측은 밝혔다.
