Lee Hae-chan, a former prime minister and a senior figure in regional politics, died on Sunday during a visit to Vietnam for a regional plenary meeting of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC). He was 73.
PUAC, a presidential advisory group, said he died two days after his hospitalization in Ho Chi Minh City following a myocardial infarction. He underwent a stent operation but did not recover.
Lee reportedly experienced flu-like symptoms before traveling to Vietnam and decided to return home one day later as his condition did not improve. While waiting for his return flight at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, he developed shortness of breath and was taken to a hospital. He reportedly suffered cardiac arrest twice, once during the transfer and again at the hospital.
A seven-term lawmaker, Lee served as prime minister from 2004 to 2006 during the Roh Moo-hyun administration. He was appointed as senior vice chairperson of PUAC in October last year.
His political career began in the 1970s with participation in the pro-democratic movement. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1988, serving seven terms, and also served as education minister under Kim Dae-jung. He maintained close ties with four liberal presidents—Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, Moon Jae-in, and Lee Jae Myung—and acted as an adviser to them, earning a reputation as a "kingmaker."
The president dispatched Cho Jung-sik, a special adviser for political affairs, to Vietnam to oversee the situation, and four lawmakers from the ruling party with ties to Lee flew to the region. Lee Hae-chan's remains are expected to be brought back to Korea on Tuesday.
PUAC는 일요일 성명을 통해 이 조직의 수석 부회장이었던 이가 호치민시의 병원으로 이송된 지 이틀 만에 사망했다고 밝혔다. 병원에서 심근경색으로 진단받았으며 스텐트 시술을 받았으나 회복하지 못했다.
이씨는 베트남으로 떠나기 전 독감과 유사한 증상을 호소했고 상태가 호전되지 않아 귀국하기로 결정한 것으로 전해진다. 탄손낫 국제공항에서 귀국편을 기다리던 중 호흡곤란을 느껴 병원으로 이송됐다.
그는 이송 중 한 차례, 병원 도착 후 한 차례 등 두 차례 심정지에 이르렀다고 전해진다.
이혜찬은 7선 의원으로, 노무현 정부 시절인 2004년부터 2006년까지 국무총리를 역임했다. 지난해 10월 PUAC 수석 부회장으로 임명됐다.
그의 정치 경력은 1970년대 반독재 운동 참여로 시작됐고 1988년 국회에 입성해 총 7선 의원으로 재임했다. 또한 김대중 행정부 시절 교육부 장관으로도 재임했다.
그는 김대중, 노무현, 문재인, 이재명 등 네 명의 진보적 대통령과 긴밀한 관계를 유지했고 이들에게 자문 역할을 수행해 왔으며 ‘킹메이커’로 평가받아 왔다.
이씨의 건강 문제 소식은 대통령이 조정식 정치담당 대통령 특별 보좌관을 현지로 파견해 이 문제에 참석하도록 한 계기가 되었다. 이씨와 개인적으로 인연이 있는 더불어민주당 소속 의원 4명도 베트남으로 날아갔다.
그의 유해는 화요일에 국내로 송환될 예정으로 전해졌다.
