Korea's Olympic-bound figure skaters will have their final tuneup before the Winter Games in Italy, taking part in the International Skating Union Four Continents Figure Skating Championships at the National Indoor Stadium in Beijing, starting Wednesday.
The event is open to skaters from non-European nations, with competitors from Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Oceania eligible. Korea will field three skaters in men's singles, three in women's singles, and one ice dance team, Hannah Lim and Quan Ye.
The men's team features Cha Jun-hwan and Kim Hyun-gyeom. Their short program is on Saturday, followed by the free skate on Sunday. Cha is the 2022 Four Continents champion and has earned bronze in 2024 and silver in 2025.
In the women's singles, Shin Ji-a and Lee Hae-in will be making their Olympic debuts this year. Their Four Continents competition opens with the short program on Thursday and the free skate on Friday. Lee won the Four Continents title in 2023 and took silver the previous year. Defending champion Kim Chae-yeon withdrew due to a lower back injury and was replaced by Yun Ah-sun.
Some countries are not sending Olympic athletes to Beijing; for example, the United States will not have any of its six Olympic-qualifying singles skaters competing this week. Korea, however, is using Four Continents as part of its Olympic preparation.
Cha is expected to adjust his programs at the Four Continents after dealing with an ankle injury that limited his season. He has been testing a new quad setup and has reportedly used about one new pair per week for the past three months to find the right fit. He previously planned two quadruple jumps in the short program and three in the free skate, but reduced to one and two, respectively, to minimize injury risk. Cha says the ankle issues are largely behind him and he hopes for a strong showing in Milan.
Shin, competing in her first senior season at age 17, won the Olympic trials convincingly earlier this month and will make her Four Continents debut.
Korea has produced at least one medalist in the women's singles at every Four Continents event since 2020.

남자 싱글 대표 선수로 차준환과 김현겸이 출전한다. 차준환은 내달 올림픽 데뷔를 앞두고 있으며 쇼트프로그램은 토요일, 프리스케이드는 일요일이다. 차준환은 2022년 Four Continents 챔피언으로, 2024년에는 브론즈, 2025년에는 실버를 차지했다.
여자 싱글의 신지아와 이혜인은 이번이 올림픽 무대 첫 출전이 될 예정이며 Four Continents 대회는 목요일 쇼트프로그램으로 시작해 이틀간 프리스케이드를 치른다. 이혜인은 2023년 Four Continents에서 금메달을 차지했고, 1년 전인 2022년에는 은메달을 땄다.
한국의 디펜딩 챔피언인 김채연은 요추 부상으로 타이틀 방어를 포기했고, 윤아선이 대회에 대체 선수로 합류했다.
일부 국가는 베이징에 올림픽 선수단을 보내지 않지만, 한국은 Four Continents를 올림픽 준비의 일부로 활용하기로 했다.
특히 차준환은 발목 부상으로 시즌 내내 제약을 받아 왔으며 Four Continents를 전초전으로 삼아 올림픽 전에 프로그램에 변화를 줄 것으로 예상된다. 그는 지난 3개월 동안 적합한 스케이트를 찾기 위해 매주 한 켤레씩 교체했다고 밝혔다. 또한 쇼트에서 4회점프를 두 차례, 프리스케이에서 4회점프를 세 차례 시도하려 했으나 부상 방지 차원에서 각각 한 차례와 두 차례로 축소했다.
차준환은 이달 초 스케이트 이슈와 발목 통증이 대부분 해소됐다고 말했으며, 밀라노에서 좋은 모습을 보여주겠다고 다짐했다.
17세로 처음 시니어 무대에 도전하는 신지아는 이번 달 초 올림픽 예선에서 압도적으로 우승했고 Four Continents 데뷔를 통해 기량을 시험하게 된다.
한국은 2020년 이후 매년 Four Continents의 여자 싱글 부문에서 최소 한 명의 메달리스트를 배출해 왔다.
