Figure skater Lee Hae-in spoke to reporters before an open training session at Taeneung Indoor Ice Arena in Seoul on Tuesday. After a performance that secured her first ticket to the Olympics, Lee was emotional and shed a few tears on the ice.
As she prepares for her Olympic debut in Milan next month, Lee expressed her desire to evoke tears of joy from fans in attendance. "I am sure the arena will be packed and I will probably be a nervous wreck," she stated. "Hopefully, when I overcome those anxious moments and put on a good performance, a lot of people will be shedding tears of happiness and giving me an ovation."
Lee, 20, finished second overall in the two-legged Olympic trials, securing the last Olympic spot for South Korea in women's singles, following Shin Ji-a.
Less than two years prior, Lee's career faced uncertainty when the Korea Skating Union (KSU) imposed a three-year ban on her due to allegations of sexual harassment against a teammate during a training camp in Italy. After taking legal action, she won an injunction that temporarily halted the suspension, and the KSU reinstated her in May last year, allowing her to compete for Olympic qualification.
During the second leg of the trials, Lee trailed Kim Chae-yeon by 3.66 points but outperformed her by over 11 points in the free skate. "I am really grateful for a chance to skate on such a big stage," Lee remarked. "I didn't think I would ever get to compete at an Olympics. I will try to represent the country well."
Reflecting on her emotional response after the free skate, Lee said, "I was just so relieved that I was able to finish the program, although it wasn't perfect. I also heard fans yell, 'Let's go Hae-in!' before the start and it was a pretty touching moment."
Lee shared that she learned a great deal about herself during her recent legal battles, focusing on activities that brought her happiness, such as listening to music, journaling, and drawing. "I learned how to maintain my own pace throughout the process, and I was able to focus on things I could control and things I had to do," she explained. "And I still love figure skating. It's comforting to me."
As she prepares for her upcoming performances, Lee has been listening to music for her short program and free skate daily, including "My Way" and "Carmen Suite No. 1." She aims to enhance her execution and regain confidence. "I want to be more complete in my execution of the programs and perform like the senior skater that I am," she stated. "I will try to regain some of it and show everything I have."

20세의 이해인은 두 차례의 올림픽 트라이얼에서 신지아에 이어 전체 2위로 한국 여자 단식의 마지막 올림픽 출전 자리를 차지했다.
그러나 불과 2년 전, 이해인의 경력은 위험에 처해 있었고 2023 세계 은메달리스트가 올림픽 트라이얼에 출전할 기회조차 없을 것처럼 보였다.
2024년 6월, 대한스케이팅연맹(KSU)은 그녀가 이탈리아 훈련 캠프 중 팀원을 성희롱했다는 혐의로 3년 간의 출전 금지를 부과했다.
이해인은 국가 관리 기관을 상대로 소송을 제기하고 임시로 징계를 중단하라는 가처분 결정을 얻었다. KSU는 결국 지난해 5월 그녀를 복권시켜 올림픽 출전 자격을 노릴 수 있도록 했다.
이해인은 올림픽 트라이얼의 두 번째 단계에서 일요일에 김채연보다 3.66점 뒤진 상태로 시작했지만, 프리스케이팅에서 김보다 11점 이상을 더 기록했다.
"이렇게 큰 무대에서 스케이팅을 할 기회를 얻게 되어 정말 감사하다"고 이해인은 말했다. "올림픽에 출전할 수 있을 거라고 생각하지 못했다. 우리나라를 잘 대표하겠다."
프리스케이팅 후 감정을 드러낸 것에 대해 이해인은 "프로그램을 끝낼 수 있어서 정말 안도했다. 비록 완벽하진 않았지만. 경기가 시작하기 전에 팬들이 '해인아, 힘내!'라고 외치는 소리를 들었는데, 그 순간이 매우 감동적이었다"고 말했다.
이해인은 최근 몇 년 동안의 법적 싸움에서 자신에 대해 많은 것을 배우고, 행복하게 해주는 것들을 찾으려고 노력했다고 전했다. 그녀는 마음을 정리하기 위해 좋아하는 노래를 듣고, 생각을 적고, 그림을 그리는 시간을 보냈다.
"과정 속에서 내 속도를 유지하는 법을 배웠고, 내가 통제할 수 있는 일과 해야 할 일에 집중할 수 있었다"고 말했다. "피겨 스케이팅을 여전히 사랑한다. 그것은 나에게 위안이 된다. 훈련 전에 워밍업을 하거나 얼음 위에서 스케이팅할 때, 더 나아질 수 있는 방법을 생각하는 것이 정말 즐거웠다. 오랫동안 스케이팅을 계속하고 싶다."
이해인은 매일 자신의 쇼트 프로그램과 프리스케이팅 곡을 듣고 있으며, Sydnie Christmas가 부른 'My Way'와 조르주 비제의 '카르멘 모음곡 1번'을 포함하여 "프로그램과 하나가 되기 위해" 노력하고 있다고 밝혔다.
"프로그램을 더 완벽하게 실행하고 내가 senior 스케이터로서 공연하기를 원한다"고 그녀는 말했다. "이번 시즌 초반의 대회에서 자신감이 부족했던 것 같기도 하다. 그것을 회복하고 내 모든 것을 보여주도록 하겠다."
