The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) voted on Monday to expel former floor leader Rep. Kim Byung-kee amid increasing corruption allegations against him, including claims of receiving preferential treatment and abuse of power.
This decision followed Kim's refusal to voluntarily resign from the party despite pressure from DPK leadership to relinquish his membership in light of the escalating allegations.
Han Dong-soo, head of the DPK's ethics committee, stated that the expulsion decision was made after a comprehensive evaluation of various factors, including the severity of the case and whether the statute of limitations for disciplinary action had expired.
According to the party's internal regulations, disciplinary measures cannot be enforced if more than three years have elapsed since the grounds for such action arose.
Kim had previously resigned as the DPK's floor leader last month following the emergence of multiple allegations, including receiving money from a former local council member in 2020 while he was serving as the secretary of the party's Seoul nomination committee.

당 내부 규정에 따르면, 징계 사유가 발생한 날짜로부터 3년이 경과하면 어떠한 징계 조치도 취할 수 없다.
김 의원은 지난달 다양한 혐의가 제기된 후 더불어민주당 원내대표직에서 사퇴했다. 그 중에는 2020년 서울 공천위원회 비서로 활동하던 시절, 한 전직 지방 의원으로부터 금품을 수수했다는 내용이 포함되어 있다.
