Five people were killed Saturday in multiple accidents on a highway in the southeastern province of North Gyeongsang, suspected to have been caused by black ice, according to authorities.
One of the incidents occurred at 6:20 a.m. near an interchange in the Sangju section of the Seosan-Yeongdeok Expressway, when a truck tumbled off the road after colliding with a guardrail while attempting to avoid a stopped vehicle. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other accidents in the vicinity included a sedan crash that resulted in the deaths of all four individuals onboard. Police are investigating potential connections between this crash and another reported pileup involving a trailer vehicle.
Additionally, a sports utility vehicle burst into flames after colliding with a truck and crashing into a guardrail at approximately 6:35 a.m.
By 11 a.m., the death toll had risen to five, with multiple injuries reported. Authorities believe that more than 20 vehicles were involved in the accidents.
Traffic on portions of the highway was temporarily restricted as a result of the incidents.
The authorities are currently investigating the crashes and suspect that black ice, formed from frozen snow or rain, contributed to the accidents.

오전 11시 기준으로 사망자는 다섯 명이며, 여러 명이 부상을 입었다. 경찰은 이번 사고에 20대 이상의 차량이 연관되었을 것으로 추정하고 있다.
사고로 인해 고속도로의 일부 구간에서 일시적으로 교통이 통제되었다.
당국은 사고 원인을 조사 중이며, 눈이나 비가 얼어붙어 형성된 블랙아이스가 원인일 것으로 suspect 하고 있다.
